KDP - Use Hardened Bolt?
Hi Everyone.
I want to tab my KDP and am only able to locate the M8 replacement bolt in strength of 8.8. That's a soft bolt.
Is it necessary to use a harder bolt or will an 8.8 suffice?
Thanx

No, you don't need to put a hardened bolt in. The existing bolt isn't hardened so there is no reason to install one any different. I reused the same bolt when I tabbed mine. I just put some lock-tight on it and a lock washer (just wanted to be sure) so I wouldn't have to worry about it.

I tried to find a hardened bolt myself. Ended up using a 8.8. Need to get one in 25 mm length, just to have a little more thread for a lock washer and the tab. I liked the extra length cause it gave more thread for the loctite to hold. May not be necessary, but thats the length I was told to use.
I believe the bolts are 10.9 grade, (still learning this metric stuff). It's funny, all the reponses I got when looking for a harder a bolt. Anything from "thats aircraft grade" to "they don't make em".
I would have felt better with the 10.9, but 8.8 will have to do. You can even look for one on the outside of the engine that is the proper size and length, use that for the tab, and put the 8.8 in the easy to access spot, and then when you locate the hardened bolt, it will be easy to switch. Sure beats having to pull the cover back off. Good luck, Kevin
BTW,try this link for the proper bolt:

Consider putting a little RVT or something at the top of the bolt to help seal it. I had the opportunity this last weekend to have my KDP killed and got to perform one on another rig myself. My "instructor" advised that he had observed leaking around some, so he started putting the sealant on them.
Good luck,
Loren
