KDP question

KDP question
OK,
enough is enough. I'm gonna try to get my KDP done while doing some other work on my truck. Here's the question:
What purpose does that KDP serve? I am under the impression it was just used to align the timing gear housing to the front of the block. It doesn't hold them together, right??
So my question is what would happen if I just removed the whole thing altogether instead of tabbing it?
Anyone?

If you would like detailed instructions complete with the part numbers for tabbing it yourself with a diagram for making your own tab let me know and I can email them to you or anyone that needs them. I prefer the tab method as if it is out you have to tear into it anyways and you can also inspect the gears and the other bolts for looseness,as well if the truck has some miles on it, it will not hurt installing a new crank seal as they do start to leak overtime. Just buy a tab kit from TST, you'll get everything you need at a better price than just the seals from Cummins along with excellent instructions. Bottom of this page-

If you're one of the lucky ones (somewhat) whose pin has fallen out without causing any damage buy and install a new one from Cummins. Don't leave the hole empty.

KDP
Okay, I've sat on the sideline and read over and over about the KDP issue. My question: if I order the KDP kit you were kind enough to give the link to, about how long will it take the "average" shade tree mechanic to do the deal? I see that the kit and shipping is around $55, which doesn't seem so bad. I changed the throttle plate and injectors myself and they were no problem. What would your guess be for a reasonable time for me to install the KDP kit? I wasn't worried about it until a big streak of bad luck lately...figured the KDP would wake up and pop me next if I don't address it.

Three to four hours if you take your time, and if you did your plate and injectors this will be a breeze. If you go easy on the cover seal you can reuse it and the seal from cummins is 14$ if memmory serves and the tab that cummins sells is less than a dollar that leaves just the thread lock to pickup , and I can email you the instructions, That is less than the 55$ and you do not have to wait, let me know if you would like them, Either way just do it and do not put it off, Goodluck,,,Rick

I just bought a jig. I figure there's no way I can take 3-4 hours, and after reading the net on how to do it, it just looks a lot more complicated to tab it. Now all I need to worry about is if the KDP has already started backing out.
