KDP Killed Me

well I bought the truck about one year ago now, I have to say that I love it mabey too much if you ask my wife. Anyways last weekend I thought that since it was warm out I would finally get arount to tabbing the KDP. I took off the timing gear cover and started to look for the dowel pin. I couldnt find it, got a mirror so that I could get a better look, still no pin I could see the hole just no pin. So I looked a little farther down the housing and there plain as day was a giant crack that had about one whole tube of black RTV smeared all over it. I couldn't believe it. I can't tell you how much I wish that I had the help of this site. Then I would have known about the KDP and I could have spotted the crack before handing any money over. I can't believe that guy sold me a truck that he knew was messed up. I guess the bottom line is do your homework before going out and spending a bunch of money.

Thanks for listening, just need someone to gripe to as I am understandably upset.

Sorry to hear about that.

I too just bought my truck. I went and tore it apart over the weekend and was praying to not find what you did. The guy I bought it from said it was done and it was, except that he only used a piece of light gauge sheet metal. I had bought the tst kit, and I am glad I did because the front seal lip was bent the other way, and that was causing the leak I had.

Good Luck.

I also seen a thread on cheap timing cases for $130 on here.

Well, on the bright side, you know the problem is there and is fixable. Alot of guys don't believe its an issue and just carry on.

Yea, I was relieved when I saw the pin was still mostly in on mine when I tabbed it. I was so wary of the KDP that I bought the truck on a sunday I think, and ordered the TST kit that night, and didn't drive the truck again until thursday when the Kit arrived and I installed the tab, lol. Thanks to this site i'd be just driving around probably never knowing about the pin and what it can do.

I drove mine for 80,000 miles before fixing the KDP. And when I got in there, it hadn't budged at all.

Sorry to hear about your RTV welded mess...

no, I haven't fixed it yet. I know where there is a used CTD from a 96 man for cheap, I am thinking of just pullin the whole thing and droppin in a new used one.

that is of course after I tab that expensive dowel pin in the new one

Mine was sold to me BY THE DEALER with a cracked cover. The crack was at the top, but I didn't know to look for it, either. And there was no leaking on the dealer-cleaned engine until a few weeks after I was driving it around. Stupid I didn't buy the used-car warrantee, and it cost me a fair fortune to repair.

That said, it's got a brand new cover on it now, and at 120,000 miles, it's an awesome truck.

Unfortunately (for the truck, not for me) I'm moving to Papua New Guinea this summer and need to sell it. Anyone looking for a 12V ?
