KDP KILLED!

KDP KILLED!
Well, today was the day. I put the truck in sick bay and tabbed the KDP. For those of you that are frugal, or as my wife calls me, squeaker. The job was not that hard to do and took about 2.5 hours. the hardest part of it was getting the cover back over the crank without a guide to keep the seal from rolling back over. But I now can sleep peacefully at night. the KDP had only walked out about 1/16 of an inch, so I tapped it back in, then tabbed it. If anyone chooses to do it this way, remove the fan shroud, fan, coolant overflow bottle, washer bottle, and the pos cable from the pass side battery, this makes things much easier. ;D

I re-used the old seals, they weren't leaking. The tough part was getting the crank seal back over the crank without rolling it. If you are going to re-use the seal+gasket, don't force the cover back on, rest one edge of the seal over the crank, then gently rotate the cover back and forth with a little pressure inward and it should go.

Altight, I'll try that. I ordered a seal and gasket set today. That way I'll have it if I need it. Do you use any gasket sealant when putting the cover back in place. You know, something like silicone gasket maker or some product such as that?

Thanks.

Good point pappy, retourque housing bolts inside and make sure mating surfaces are clean. I took some brake cleaner on a rag and wiped everything clean, then took some indian head gasket shellac and lightly brushed it on the housing, then put the cover back on using the method I decribed earlier.

I just did mine (94 2500 4x2 81000 miles. I picked up the new gasket and seal from Cummins NW. They told me to difinitely use silicone on BOTH the cover and the case. Also I didn't need to remove the fan shourd, or overflow bottle or batt. cable. But I did have to remove the water pump drive pulley. And on reinstalling the speed sensor above the damper, you use a .05 brass filer gauge to reset the clearence.

Re:KDP KILLED!
a bit of engine oil on my crank seal and she slid right back on.
A word of advice is to put some penetrating oil on that big ol fan nut the day B4 andjust B4 you whack it with a big drift.(reverse tread)
I found out that my KDP wasn't there when I opened it up and after I put it all together that it has a new housing cause it's not painted green and the engine nameplate tags are srewed back on, so the guy who owned it B4 me must have learned the hard way.
Poor guy.
