there is a hole in the cowl that the pushrods must go up into to be removed.

Yes, there are a pair of holes. You have to remove the plastic cowl, wiper motor assembly, and two rubber plugs. Then you'll have access to #5 and #6.

I did it without removing the cowl... just pulled the plastic hole plugs.

Can the Pin Just be Pulled Out without putting a new one in?

If I pull my cover to replace a leaking gasket and if the dowel pin is still in place, can't I just pull the pin out and throw it away. Why do I need to leave it in there? A local shop, Gillette Diesel, said just pull it out, that I dont need it. Is this correct?

some say you need it some say you don't, but it's just about as easy to pull 1 10mm bolt & put the tab over it while you're in there, I have my case back on & am ready to put the pump back on now. hopefully I'll get to hear it run sometime before the sun comes up????? Dusty, oh yeah for those of you who might try this yourself, don't forget to pull the lift pump before trying to pull the cam out!!!!! & I just couldn't figure out why in the world that thing wouldn't come out???????? man did I feel dumb as a stick for a few min.'s!!!!!! figured ya'll might get a laugh out of that, Dusty

No, the dowel pin serves a purpose besides assembly.
Besides that unless it's almost ready to fall out chances are it will be impossible to pull out.
