KDP got me!!!!!!!

I'm not exactly a mechanical genius, and this seems to be just over my limit. I'm not eve sure if my truck has or hasn't been fix. But would a dealer be able to fix this? Is it under some sort of recall?

I guess DC could argue that it's not a safety hazard, so they won't issue a recall... but I say getting stranded in the middle of no where in freezing cold weather is a lsight safety hazard!

There are 2 ways to repair this problem...1) drill and tap the gear housing and install a blocking screw...2) remove the front cover then install a tab over the dowel pin to block its movement
Theres not anyway to tell if you have the dowel pin tabbed other then removing the cover to look ??
If your engine was fixed with a blocking screw you mite be able to see behind the fan hub bracket and see the head of the screw...but its hard to see with a dirty engine
If you have owned the truck for the last 2 years the changes that its been fixed are slim...because this problem was only found about 2 years ago
Dodge and Cummins know about these dowels because they now supply a upgraded rear gear housing thats steped so the dowel cant come out...but they insist its not a problem = no recall
Cost to replace the rear gear housing if the dowel comes out and cracks it is $2000-3000
Overall the KDP Jig Kit is the fastest and best way to stop this problem
So any owner of a 94-98 Cummins is courting a possible engine timing gear failure or at the lease a major oil leak

Re:KDP got me!!!!!!!
As a newbie to this site, I'd like to thank all who posted about the KDP. Last Tuesday I spent 5 hours removing the gear cover to "tab" my pin. It was half way out!. I have a '94 2500 4X2 with 89,000 miles that I bought new. The fix was actually easy(thanks to the info from here). I made my own tab. Best five hours I've spent. My Dodge is completely stock. This is a great site and I hope I can contribute to it.

Re:KDP got me!!!!!!!
I like mine just the way it is. Besides I be retired and ain't looking fer a job to boost my hp. Actually I am really satisfied with the performance just runnin' her stock. It does everything I want it too. I pack a 3,000 lb camper all over the place and I've only added air bags to the rear. The automatic and 4:10 gears do quite well. I do enjoy reading what the rest of you are doing to your trucks. Who knows maybe I got a rich uncle somewhere!

Re:KDP got me!!!!!!!
I just got a 1996 with front end damage. I will be replacing the front end and will have the coolers off this week where I can stand in front of it and stare at the engine front. I assume I should do the tab process since I will have the access to the front. Is that what everyone recomends?
