KDP got me!!!!!!!
Yup, Any one reading this that has still not gotten thier KDP done please go get it done asap. I kept pushing it off and pushing it off until about a week ago it happened to me. I was very lucky though, it didnt put a crack in the timing case housing or tear up anything internaly in the engine. It just did a little chewing on the inside of the timing case. I put it back together tonight with a new crank seal and everything seems to be holding up pretty well. I left out the pin for now because it would have taken my dealer ship until thursday to get it in and i cant afford to have my truck down for that long. I have pictures of the damage but i will post them later when i have more time. - Chris

Re:KDP got me!!!!!!!
I have bought the Jig Repair Kit and will be doing mine and a buddies as soon as the weather gets above 40* maybe tomorrow I also plan to do a photo step by step and puttin it all on to one of my web pages
The new Jig kits are nice they come with the air block off and air plugs and the fan wrenches
I think my buddies truck will be a problem his is high miles so the KDP mite be moving outward...if it has moved we will try to move the dowel back in or mite have to remove the front cover

You need to get the pin or a new one back in position from what I've read. The pin maintains precise positioning for gear case and helps prevent case shifting from the slop in bolt holes. Case shifting would be bad for injector pump timing, etc..

I have a dumb question. Can somebody explain to me how the timing could change by not having the dowel pin in place? When I tab killed mine there would have been nothing stopping me from jumping in the seat and starting the engine with the cover off. The p-7100 pump mounts on the opposite side of the gears from the cover.
Tom

When you tabbed your dowel pin you only removed the front cover not the rear section which has the dowel pins...if one of the pins are gone and the bolts attacting the rear cover to the block loosen up the slop in the bolt holes could allow the rear gear case to shift which can change pump timing a few degrees
Hopefully I can get two trucks repaired today with the Jig Kit we had a Ice Storm yesterday but is gettin up to 45* today and I need to do this outside I will be doing this fix without using air pressure (no compressor) so I'll try the old grease on the bit trick and I'll drill the contersink hole out before I finnish drilling thru the gear housing...the tap shouldnt drop much metal onto the gear if its coated with grease too and I keep turning the engine so metal dont build up on the timming gear :P

Re:KDP got me!!!!!!!
Just got done fixin Two KDP's...parked both trucks side by side and did each step from one truck to the other when very smooth that way...I didnt have a compressor to blow drilling chips out of the motor so I only drilled in far enuf to countersink and used a vacum to suck out the chips then I finnished the hole while using the vacum....we hit the KDP on my buddies truck...so with alot of differant tricks I finnaly got the dowel moved back enuff to lock it into place with the kit stop bolt ;D ;D ....doing both trucks only took 4 hours.

I do advise any pre 98 owner to do the KDP fix before it cost you a broken gear housing...we got lucky with my buddies truck and got the dowel back in place it was very loose and ready to come out (he's buying the beer tonite) :

I will have this fix availible on a web page and in the FAQ's for all members...with photos and a process description the way I did it without using a compressor to blow the drilling chips out of the engine

.

Re:KDP got me!!!!!!!
I set up a web page about the process I used to fix the KDP took about 2 1/2 hours per truck (did 2 trucks at once)...the peace of mind after gettin the KDP done is great...I always worryed that the dowel pin would leave me stranded in some little town 2000 miles from home :-[

http://www.phantomcycle.com/kdpfix.html

;D ;D ;D ;D
