Talking KDP fixins'

I searched the KDP and found the jig VS. the tab. I've obviously never been into the KDP on my 1994 but I have 215k on it and a serious oil leak at the front of the motor and was going to pull the timing cover and fix the oil leak, till now. Now it sounds like I have got two things to fix once the timing cover is off. What's the best fix, how do I know if the KDP has already been fixed (there is a bead of gray silicone all the way aroud the timing cover that doesn't look like it has 215k on it) and what do i look for once I'm in there?

Sounds like you're a little late on fixing the KDP. You're probably going to need a new cover to do it right.

so theres no way to see if the KDP has already been fixed without taking the cover off and having a looksee?

Unless you can talk to the PO, you have to remove the cover.

You can take the belt pulley directly on top of the timing housing off and see if there's a little allen screw going into the timing housing.

Sounds like since you have the leak already the KDP already bit the dust and cracked the cover. Pull the belt, shroud and fan pulley and bracket and directly under the fan pulley bracket there is probably a nice big crack, possibly with a chunk missing. Thats where the KDP has punched through the case...It may be loaded with silicone from the sounds of it.

With the KDP fallen out, your case will start to "walk" and slip off of the gaskets, leading to more oil leakage. To fix it properly you'll need a new case, and it involves pulling the cam, pushrods, tappets, radiator, condensor, intercooler...and a load of other stuff. Its pricey to have done...so if you can turn a wrench you'll save a boatload doing it yourself.

what does that tell me? I take it you take the screw out and look into the timing cover? I just read about a vaccum leak that fixed an oil leak. I think I will check into that too seeing as i have heater problems, my abs light stays on, and my cruise is a bit sluggish from what it used to be.

Whoa guys dont scare the poop out of him.
Gret silicone can indicate that it has been fixed.

If the cover wasnt sealed properly when fixed, that could be the cause of your leak.
How much oil does it leak per day?
Best way to fix, is to pull the cover and so it right. The jig method works, BUT not to many people like it.
Here is the kit most of use used.

If you notice it comes with GREY silicone.
I would order the kit and pull the cover, if it hasnt been fixed, you can fix it and see if the pin is still in there, or if it has been fixed, return it or sell it on here.

that's right. it's not necesarily fallen. I had an oil leak out of my front timing cover, and it was just the gasket leaking.

I have often wondered if you could use one of those flexible fiber optic viewers (like the ones you look down gun barrels with) and put it in the oil fill spout to check the KDP? I realize not every one has access to one but it would be a neat way to check if possible.

What Kind Of Heater Problems, The Way It Sounds You Might Possibly Have A Vacuum Leak Cauasing The Vac Pump To Pressurize The Crank Case Mine All Of A Sudden Had Bad Blowby And Ihave Been Trying To Figure Out Why I Think The Vacuum On Mine Has Been Leaking A While But It Still Is Something To Look Into As Far As The Abs Light Goes. A Good Place To Start Is The Line That Comes Off The Vacuum Pump, There Should Be A Tee Somewhere Going To More Vac Lines On The Firewall. Check The Line Fom The Tee To The Firewall

IF YOUR GOING TO FIX TEHE FRONT SEAL LEAK WILL KNOW RIGHT AWAY IF THE DOWL PIN HAS FALLEN OUT. IF IT HASNT YOU CAN ALWAYS GO TO YOUR LOCAL CUMMINS DEALER AND GET ONE, I THINK THEY SELL THEM

I've got tons of oil leaks on the front of my 97, but not from the KDP falling, as the pin was jigged. I popped the allen screw out after getting the truck home from Texas, looked in there with a bore scope and its still in place.

My 95, on the other hand, has no leaks what so ever, but I have no clue if it's been cured yet or not.

No I mean if there is a screw there then that means it has been tabbed by the previous owner.

Tappets don't need to come out. You can also pull the cam gear off the cam, and reduce the amount of other things you have to remove.

When the KDP problem became evident several years ago a fellow on anther website tried using a bore scope with no success.
