KDP: Cummins or felpro seal and gray RTV or gasket?

I was looking at a couple of different KDP kits, one comes w/ a tube of gray RTV, the other with a gasket for the front cover. From experience, which is less prone to leaking? Also, I can probably grab a felpro front seal kit pretty cheap, how do their front crank seals hold up? Thanks

I got the tst kit and it leaks some out of the (neoprene seal)? I think that is the material. The gray RTV sealant is to go around the housing, and the seal is to go over the crank. I have heard the cummins one is really good but that is just an opinion.

Hope this helps some

I used the TST KDP kit which comes with a cummins seal. But instead of RTV, I went to Cummins West and picked up a front gasket.

RTV is messy!

I used the supplied RTV with no problem at all. Just follow the directions on the package. Apply a 1/8" bead, finger tighten the bolts then let it sit an hour, then come back and torque all the bolts. You only get a mess if you lay the RTV on real heavy. If you want you can use a rag with some brake cleaner and it'll clean right off perfect.

I was just asking my brother-in-law to order in the gasket and seal so I can do mine. I asked him which he thought was better...gasket, rtv, or do what we do on some gas engines, which is put sealant on each side of the gasket effectively using both. He said the gaskets he gets, which I think is from Cummins(but I could be wrong) has a bead of sealant in the gasket that crushes out as it's torqued down. He said he's not had any complaints or problems using it.

I did the KDP two years ago using the TST kit. The gray RTV has not leaked since. I think the people that have trouble w/RTV are just not using it right

I got the tst kit and then bought the gasket through cummins. I have had good luck with RTV but decided to go with the stock setup anyways since I didn't want to have to open it up again.

I bought the Fel pro gasket and seal kit installed it a year and half ago no problems at all. Also I was able to get it from my local auto parts store ordered in the morning had it in the afternoon, If I had ordered the TST kit would have been waiting a couple of weeks for it. I also would use a gasket over RVT any day and only do it once.

I used the RTV that came with the TST kit, no leaks at all. Just make sure to get both surfaces clean and dry before putting it on.

I bought just the tab/bolt from TST, I'm probably going to source my own seal, and I have plenty of loctite on hand. What was sealing the timing cover to the case and the case to the block from the factory?

When I did my 1997 over 4 years ago, I had a seal and gasket on hand as the closest parts were 50 miles away. We used the red silicone on the gasket and reused the seal. It has yet to leak even a drip.
