interchanging 12v motors 1st to 2nd gen...

well just figured out i've got the dreaded 53 block in my 2nd gen....

now what i'm wondering, found an excellent deal (cant really pass it up) on a 89 1st gen truck.

now what i'm thinking is buy the 1st gen and part out everything but the block/ head basically. then build this motor up, oring's studs etc while its outside of the truck sitting on an engine stand in my garage (easy to work on ) then swap it into my 2nd gen with the 53 block.... will the p7100 etc bolt up to the 1st gen 12v motor?

what else is different. what else would i need to know about this swap.

just thinkin i can drive the 53 block till it dies then swap in a rebuilt and "built" motor.

I think the head is different on the older one because its not intercooled.Youd probably have to use the newer head

You'd need to keep the newer head, but the blocks are identical! Also, you'll have to change the front covers...the p-pump won't bolt to the old engine without it! That involves pulling the cam, which doesn't matter if the engines will be out of the truck...it's easy!

I'm doing the same with my 98, but I have a long block out of a F800 Ford I'm gonna use to build!

Don't quote me on the numbers but I believe the '89 head uses 9mm bore injectors. They found the head tends to crack between the valve bores and injector bore. Not sure of the year ('91.5?) but they went to a 7mm injector to fix the cracking mess.

With that, most after market injectors for the 1st Gens use the 7mm cores and if you want to run them in an earlier head, you'll need adapters. You might consider using the 2nd Gen 12v head on the '89 block.

You can use the p7100 but you'll need the complete gear housing assembly from the 2nd Gen engine as it's more sturdy to handle the heavier IP. Should bolt right up.

Not sure on this, but you might also consider running the 2nd Gen cam. Seems I've read here it may have slight advantage over the 1st Gen. But again, I'm not sure on that one.

Hope this helps.

Yep...went all the way to Texas to buy it, of course I didn't know it when I get there.

From what I can tell, only the 98's had them...but not as many of the 12v's were as compared to the 24v's...We got lucky!

The block is the same one, doesn't matter if it's a 12v or 24v! That being said, Jim Fulmer's truck was/is a 53 block...I seem to remember him doing a new engine, so I'd say it's not anymore! If I wasn't going to daily drive this thing, the 53 wouldn't bother me...if it cracked, I'd fix it and go on. But since this truck will see lots of use, I don't trust it! If I was building a race only rig, I'd build this block and wait for it to crack...because it wouldn't get enough use to worry about a crack that may or may not happen!

IMHO,
Chris
