Iv never seen a seal fail that fast or bad in my life, so if i were you id ask them if there is a discount to repair the KDP if it turns out that the seal is not at fault.

That or just tell them to go on into it and check the KDP while they are that far in already.

If they're into that far and the KDP isn't the problem they should at least tab the pin so it doesn't become the problem later.
99% of the work would already been done just to replace the seal.

I have seen a couple of those gear housing gaskets split and blow out over the years. Yes, it's also pretty likely to be the crank seal or KDP, but it is possible for the gasket to suddenly cause that big a leak. It's just a simple paper gasket and they tend to dry out and shrink as they age. Of course when they shrink, essentially they are making the housing bolts loosen off at the same time so that adds to the danger.

OK, !!

No surprise to most of you I know! It is the KDP!! Taking the outer cover off to see how extensive the damage is but I was wondering about what somebody said early on about using JB Weld if the damage wasn't to extensive.

Please give me some opinions. 3K to fix with new cover!

Wow!! That is cheap! They said $630 for a new one but they may be able to Heli arc it once they have it off! We will see! May be worth buying that one instead!

Might want to drive it for a couple of years before you upgrade.

The 12 valve is pretty much the ultimate simple, easy to keep going truck. Yea, you got bit like many of us have, but once that devil pin is constrained, they are almost bulletproof.

How come most guys pull the cam and not just the cam gear? Seems like a waist of time to me or I'm missing something?

I have suggested that to these folks & they are going to try to get it off. Not much room behind the gear for a puller but I know it can be done!

Because they don't know it's easier to pull the gear.
Cummins NW in my parts will tell a person to go somewhere else if they insist on pulling the cam.
