I was recently on holiday pulling our 5th wheel and developed a Big Boy Oil leak! I took it in to some folks on the road & they said that it was the Inner Timing Chain Cover Gasket {I could actually part of hanging out}! They said that it would about 23 hours labor to fix it. We were all the way down in Brookings, Oregon from Seattle area so I decided to limp home and continue our Holiday leaking 1 1/2 quarts of oil every hour!

Does that estimate sound about right and is there any easier fixes? I am very mechanical but this sounds like it may be to much for me to tackle!

Oh, it is a 1997 1 Ton with a 12V 5.9

Search for Killer Dowel Pin here I think you just experienced one.

 

you might just need to tighten the inner bolts to get it to stop. can you post a pic of the leak and location? 23hrs is way to long and there is no chain its a gear case.

I can't see your photo from work, but even pulling the cam gear rather than pulling the camshaft, you are looking at 7-8 hours minimum.

I would have a case available or time to wait on one to come in, I would just about bet a KDP problem as well, loose bolts wouldn't start that fast I would bet.

x2 on what Lary Ellis said, I have seen people not repair the borken case and just use JB weld with a skilled hand.

 

It sounds like everybody thinks it is a KDP problem when it starts leaking Oil that bad so quickly so I am thinking I may give it a shot! I guess my only fear is getting in there & getting stumped and then have to have it towed to a shop in pieces! I hope the cause of the leak is obvious once I get in there. Oh well, what the hell... I'll try it I guess!!

All that needs to be removed to see if the case has KDP damage is the fan and fan bearing housing.

It could be your drain plug too, Iv never had a drain plug come loose on anything I own except my CTD

 

Our normal repair shop looked at our truck Friday to try to determine exactly where the leak was coming from & they think it may be a Crankshaft Seal & then of coarse the fan is throwing oil everywhere. How much you ask after hearing the last on the road estimate of 23 hours? 200 bucks!!!! So Monday they are going to install that, Pressure Wash everything & then have me monitor it to make sure the leak has stopped. I have my fingers crossed for sure!
