injector pump problems help please

Well I noticed my '94 has been feeling a little sluggish lately and mileage sucks 15 mpg, even after valve adjustment, I checked fuel lines and for boost leaks and found none, so I took it to the local diesel shop and they said the #1 piston in the injector pump seized up, and wanted $1900 to fix it.What would yall do?
thanks again

Thats a little "Over priced".I'm guess its the DV in the barrel is sticking.Unless there is some sort of number one cylinder that I'm not aware of.Does the truck smoke or not???

It seems a little high , but what all is included ?
I've seen rebuilt pumps go for $1,200 1,500 , if your in a hurry it seems you can never find the cheap price [ as low as $700-800 ] .
If they have a few other things on the written est. , that may not be too bad , last shop I worked in 5-6 yrs ago was charging $98 an hour , so it can go up quick .
Then for what I would do , or do do when I come into a little extra money , is buy parts before i need when I find a real good price , bought a new Nippendezo Alternator [ not rebuilt ] for about $160 , low mile starter for $75 ect. .
Then do all the labor I can my self , which is most everything , I do not have a pump bench [ yet ] .
See if they will deal .
Would you feel OK doing the R&R yourself ?
Then try to find a good low mile used one , around $600-800 , that can be the [ the high end ] cost of a core .

only time it smoke is on cold startups then it blows a pretty good cloud of white smoke,no black smoke, but does seem to have a small miss to it, also only 160,000 miles on it

thats weird.. youd think if one injector wasnt getting enough fuel it would run with a major stumble that you could find by loosening injector lines one at a time with the motor running.
I would check to make sure you have good fuel pressure coming into the injector pump. Should be 25psi or so at idle.
Then maybe check your air intake. test it with a 4" pvc pipe cap, an air chuck and some compressed air and listen for leaks.
If the pump is indeed toast, that pensacola diesel that advertises on ebay is supposedly ok to deal with. They may even take a 160hp core for a 215 pump since they do custom pumps too. They were in the neighborhood of 800$ last time I looked. You can swap the pump yourself if you set TDC before you take the old one off.. then have a shop time it properly.
Some money you can save if you dont mind messing with it yourself.

I agree that you should feel or hear something if one injector isn't getting fuel. It is possible that it is hanging open into the exhaust stroke and injecting fuel then but I would think that you could smell it.

Once you are really convinced that everything else is working right including intake, exhaust(is the cat there?), and the rest of the fuel system, your pump will need to be put on the bench. The price you stated seems a little high to me. The pump on my truck was rebuilt just before I purchased it for $1200 by the local guy who is quite good at this stuff. If you need the truck to be running right immediately, then it may be worth the price, if not, I would shop around. These pumps are pretty common and a lot of the pump shops have rebuilt them.

I would take it to a Cummins certified shop before I spent 1900 bucks.

Inspect your Injectors before you throw a pump on it.
