Part of the problem is the heavy front end of the truck. Even if you put a locker in the back, it won't solve all of your problems. Sometimes you will just have to use 4WD.

thanks for the help. Our 98 4x4 has a stock posi and it works great. after 250k it still chirps the tires going around a corner.

are the posi's for a 80 and 70 interchangeable?

Re: junkyards. I have been to many in the Phoenix area and have always come up empty.

They are not interchangeable. With a Dana 80, I had a shop install a Trac-Loc limited slip a couple of years ago. Unfortunately they set it up so it wasn't all that tight, and it slips quite a bit. A different shop installed a Powr-Loc in the D70 in my 1992 truck, and set it up tight enough to chirp the tires in a tight corner, and it was wonderful how much traction I had.

Runningbird, are you sure you have a D80? I thought that the early 2nd gens all had D70s, even with the manual transmissions. If you have a 70, I'd highly recommend a Powr-Loc, and tell the installer you want it set up as stiff as possible. If you truly have an 80, then go with a Trac-Loc and tell them the same thing.

Mine also has a D80 35 spline open. I also been thinking about a LS. I would like to have the clutch pack style but my local dealer wants $2900 for just the parts. The torsen gear type are about $600 and I am very tempted to go that route.

Wow, $2900 is beyond ridiculous! You should be able to pick up one from a place like quad4x4.com for $500 - 600, shipped.

The ones I have seen for $400-$600 for a 3.54 had not been rebuilt and had many miles on them. I felt I could be in for a steep total if the clutches and other parts were worn out. I have seen some rebuilt ones but they were for 4.10 and up chunk. I have been waiting for a rebuilt clutch type for a 3.54 but by next summer I may just go ahead and get the torsen gear style LS.
