How slushy should a slushbox be?

Hey everyone,
One of the things I noticed on my truck is the auto tranny seems really mushy until the torque converter locks up. I was watching it while taking off and the rpms hardly ever change on the tach (less than 100rpm change with gears) even when the tranny shifts, it also doesn't pull very hard until the T/C locks up. Any ideas? Is this normal? The fluid doesn't smell burnt or anything but I've seen more vibrant red fluid before. I'm thinking I should change the fluid, filter, and maybe adjust the bands in the tranny. Do you think this will help or is it SOL?

Ok at least something isn't wrong, it was the first thing I noticed about the truck when test driving it. The other thing was it NEEDS more power, but I'll be fixing that soon.

About the fluid, it looks really watery and is very lightly red. Is this normal? I thought the fluid should be quite bright red and a little more viscous.

If I were to adjust the bands would the tranny shift tighter?

well if ur so worried about the fluid then take out a piece of clean sheet metal..put a drop of the used fluid on there and a drop of fresh fluid out of a jug and compare....but i dont think thats the issue......my tranny shifts the same way under light to medium throttle...but when i rev her to 2400rpms she drops about 400rpms between shifts and its very crisp/snappy

the only two things i have learned u can do is 1) get a new TC that stalls nice and low or 2) get a gsk so u have fueling past ur 2000-2400rpm stall point and then u can pull up those rpms till u lock up......the uglier method thats frowned upon is the lock up switch...as soon as u hit 2nd gear u'll bang through all the gears locked

My stock tranny shifted the same way and went 212k but on my new Suncoast the shifts are crisp to the point of being jerky. This is the way I want it, heck with a bunch of heat generating slippage. The tranny techs adjusted it this way at my request and agreed it was best for the tranny.

I defenitely am going to get a gsk soon, it revs to low as is. When I revved it up to 2400 there still wasn't any significant drop through the gears or defined shifts until the torque converter kicked in (then it hauled!). I think I'll just change the fluid on principal even though the place I bought it from claimed they changed them all. I'm working on getting a dial type 1/4" drive torque wrench for making my 72 in-lbs accurate for setting the bands.

I don't want jerky shfits so much but I want them to be defined, at least move the tachometer when it shifts!

Thanks for the replies,

Bill with the suncoast does ur tach drop between shifts? is the difference between the trannies night and day? what about when u have amassive load there...how much will it rev before u pull?...id like something that will let me rev to 1600 and then everything gets right to the ground.....the reason im saying this is because alot of guys get new trannys only to get a stalling TC of 2000rpms...thats powerstroke territory...no thank you ......i drove a 2003 chev with the 6 liter gasser and that tranny is and TC is so tight! tach dropped between shifts...heck i think that stall on that TC was lower than on ours!...i want something like that mated to my engine...that truck has 1/2 the torque of a cummins yet it pulls alot more efficiently thats embarrassing i dont want my friend knowing that

The stock fluid coupling in the torque convertor is loose as all get out. That is why it doesn't pull very hard 'til lock-up. My stocker was the same way. The Goerend tranny and TC on the other hand, is all

Wish I hadn't waited so long. I absolutely hated the stocker. Can't slip this one.

Yep, they are in Iowa. I'm actually talking with a local shop owner who also happens to be a DTT builder, I'll see what he has to say about it.
