How do I know if my '97 has a LSD Diff ?
Just found out my truck had an accident to the read end and it was exchanged for a rear end from the junk yard. Is there a way I can tell if it is a LSD?

Put the truck in nuetral, block the front wheels, and jack up one rear tire. If the tire is hard to turn or won't turn at all, it's an LSD. If it spins easily it's not.

OK Berner,<br><br>I just did what you told me. Of course I had to do it twice because after I did it the first time and put everything away, I forgot to take it out of gear. So I did it again with the same results..the tire DID NOT turn. <br><br>In my pea brain I would think it would have to spin to have a LSD. <br>Berner, ARE YOU SURE IT IS NOT SUPPOSED TO TURN and that indicates it's a LSD.<br><br>Please reasure me, which in fact I'm a happy guy to know I have a LSD.<br><br>By the way..What's a Limited Slip Differential..Does that mean if one rear tire is on ice and spins, then the tire on ice would stop spinning and the other rear tire would turn...is that correct....Thanking you for all your help in advance...Jim

Garry,<br><br>After I read your message, I went out to check again and make sure Emergency brake was off and it was.<br><br>Now you know why I'm scared to death to do the KDP fix.

Or jack up the back end...both tires off the ground. Trans in nuetral...e-brake off...(block front tires). Grab one back tire and turn. while turning look at the other tire. If it turns the same direction as the one you are turning then it is LS rear. If it does not turn or goes opposite then it is an open rear.

Jimbo<br>There are clutch packs in a limited slip diff that "lock" both axles to the carrier that the ring gear mounts to, so to speak. The axles can turn at different speeds when the clutch packs slip, allowing the outer wheel to turn faster when going around corners. Without the clutch packs (non-LSD), the axle with the least amount of resistance will turn or spin if that wheel is on ice. With a limited slip, both wheels drive no matter what road conditions each tire is on. Clear as mud??<br>From what you've said, I'd say you had a LSD.

Check for the anti spin tag on the rear differential. It is usally held in place by two bolts. This is so the fluid change guy remembers to put the additive in.<br><br>I had this same question on my 97 and mine does not. But that is what 4X4 is for.

Srigs, I noticed a tab about 1 1/2 " x 1" attached by one bolt from the pan covering the gears.<br><br>It was very rusty. I cleaned it best I could and it looks like it says,"USE LIMITED SLIP DIFF OIL "something" "<br><br>Does anyone have the exact wording out there?

Slam on the brakes if front of a big rig. If they don't lock then you anti-lock brakes. But what doe it matter, either way you get a new truck. : J/K<br>DM01

For the antilock brakes, check the master cylinder and look for the brake lines leading from it to a box with a bunch of brake lines and several electronic connections. If you have the antilock, there will also be a control fuse in the fuse panel.

RCW, I know the truck started with anti-lock brakes, but when they changed the rear end I'm not sure they installed a rear end with the anti-brakes system.
