Not cheap enough.

Sounds like you have gears gone.

If you have a place to store it, buy it and part it out, you likely would make more $$ anyway.

From what I've read $1200-$1500 USD will get you a rebuilt entire tranny.
Doesn't include shipping for the new one or the core return.

yes, 1200-1500 is about right. Ive seen used ones going for 1200-1500. Rebuilds going for 1500.

Occasionally, you can find a deal on craigslist, ebay, newpaper, right place right time, etc.

because
1. it's a decent transmission.
2. everybody wants one, jeep guys, toyota guys, chev guys, etc...etc..
3. big transmission, weighs 200 pounds dry, so more metal
4.it's not just gears, it's an nv 4500.

try beeton truck and auto wreckers, for an nv 4500, then swap tail pieces, that might work. won't be too hard because it's 2-wheel drive, not like th 4x4 trucks

Dude, there are some things you should not skimp on. The things that make your truck go and stop should not be followed by "how cheap", in my opinion.
There's a saying, " quick, cheap, good, pick any two"
If you're looking to flip the truck, don't sell someone a possible POS.
