How can you tell the diff btwn 12v/24v 98
I'm just starting my search for the elusive "Golden Goose" Out here in AZ there seems to be a lot of 98's, but how can I tell if it's 12v or 24v BEFORE I go look at them? Dumb question #2 Are all Cummins Diesels Turbo? This is my first post here, so go ahead and let me have it.
At least I'm switching to a Diesel........

Easy... Pop the hood and if it says "24 valve" on the valve cover, it is... If it does not say that, then it is a 12v.
All dodge Cummins trucks are turbo diesels.
Welcome to the DTR, by the way... ;D You will learn a lot here!

Dont worry about the questions - everyone has to start someplace. You definitely have found the right place to learn if you want/need to know about the Dodge CTD. The combined knowledge on this site is amazing and these guys will save you a lot of hassle and money when it comes to repairs/modifications/ and maintenance. Welcome.
12 or 24V ?? Thats pretty easy.........ask the owner....if they dont know have them open the hood....the 12V will say 12V and the 24 will say 24V, both will be on the valve cover. Also, the door badges on the 24V will say 24Valve Turbo Diesel, whereas the 12V will just say Cummins Turbo Diesel.
Im not aware of any pickup diesels that arent turbo charged. The only ones that come to mind are the 6.2L Chevy diesels but there arent a whole lot of them anymore.

The eighth digit in the vin,if it is 6 then its a 24v, a letter D then 12v,go to www.dodgeram.org/tech/specs/vin_decode.htm print it out and you will have a resource for all the info on the trucks you are going to go look at. Goodluck and Happy Thanksgiving, Rick

Glad to help, you are in the same hunt as I!!! I am glad you are aways from me or we would be racing around looking for the same truck , When your looking at any you find, take the vin to the dealer and they will pull up the work that the truck has seen done to it at any dodge dealer, check on if any recalls are outstanding, ask for the maintenance records,if not any you should really look it over, ask what filters and oil and changing times they did, well I will quit preaching and Goodluck and Happy Thanksgiving, Rick

Re:How can you tell the diff btwn 12v/24v 98
Some more differences, if you are on the phone and they can look at the engine...fuel lines are run differently, intake airhorn is different, and the easiest one is that on the 12 valve, each cylinder has its own valve cover, with a long plate over the top of all six. On a 24 valve, it is one long piece (valve cover) that covers the entire top of the engine...

I think it should say on the dorrs as well. Right underneath the Ram 2500 or 3500 in orange letters. A 12V will just say Cummins Turbo Diesel and a 24V will say 24V Cummins Turbo Diesel.

Re:How can you tell the diff btwn 12v/24v 98
the 12 valves have 12 valves and the 24 valves have 24 valves.....ok, i added my 2.....
Seriously....12 valves have the injectors exposed and they are located on the left (while facing the motor) side of the valve cover. The 24V has the injectors under the cover but the high pressure fuel lines go into the head at the right side of the cover. Plus all the other stuff that was mentioned!

Bewilling to travel , or wait a really long time. I took 3 planes, and one rent a car to get just half way to mine, (he met me half way) . I spent about 400$ getting to it and 24 hrs straight.......the drive home was 80$ and 23 hrs, with a couple nap breaks.
It was worth every minute.
