how bad are the 97 autos about going out?
well i'm loking at buying a new truck 97 ext cab 4x4 with an auto . my ? is how much trouble has people had with the auto in this app. the truck has 140000 on it , no pump ajustments and fluid changed every 30 to 40 thousand mi and mostly highway driving.

My 97 has 119K mile with no problems and still holding strong.
If there has been good maintenance they you should be good for a long time.

It all depends on how it was driven and if the stock hp has been jacked up. These are actually very good auto trannies but like anything can be abused.
212k on my stocker with just filter changes. I have the RH trans though which some folks say is better, a '97 will have a RE.

all the towing done with the truck is either 24 ft 3 horse slant to local play days or 20ft drop deck hauling 40hp jd tractor. he dont do much with the truck he is a dr. .

Probably what kills these trannies the fastest is stomping on the pedal while OD is locked up or not pushing the OD off button under 50 mph. Hard to know if a previous owner followed these simple rules, hope for the best but plan for the worse.
