high mileage KDP fixed
My son's 1994 Dodge 3500 had 172,000 miles on it when he purchased it used and I first heard about the KDP. I originally figured (wrongly it turned out) that the KDP was probably already fixed since the truck has such high mileage. Also, with a gooseneck mount and electric brake controller it had probably seen some heavy service. I recently upgraded my internet service and can cruise much faster now so I visited several Dodge diesel forums. The frequency of the KDP topics scared me into action. The truck now has 182,000 miles and the KDP is tabbed. I chose the tab method because the crank seal was leaking and needed to be replaced anyway. The KDP had come out about 3/16th of an inch. Tapped it back in and installed tab. The job was relatively easy with the exception of the fan nut and the front seal. I expected these problems thanks to all of the KDP posts I had read. Even with a 36mm fan wrench, I could not hold the pulley secure enough to break the nut loose. But, thanks to the post, the hammer and punch trick worked nicely. As for the seal, it finally went on but with less finesse then I would have liked. It may or may not leak at some point in the future. I put the seal in the cover first and then put the cover on with the new seal installed. A very tight, dry seal on a dry crank is a first for me but that is the way Cummings designed it. Not leaking yet so maybe it is okay.
Thanks again for everyone’s help and for taking the time to share your knowledge and experience. By the way, this will be my truck as soon as I can talk my son out of it.
;D ;D
