Help turning up a 97 5.9 cummins
I have a 97 dodge with a 5.9 cummin,5 speed trans 4x4 3/4 ton. it has really started being a dog here lately. it has never been tampered with just the normal services and overhead adjustments. I read threw a few other articles on how to turn it up, i took off the top cover and slid the plate almost all the way forward and put it back together. And as you probably guess nothing happened not a change. What am i missing here?? Anyone know??

did you slide toward the firewall or the front of the truck? toward the firewall is soposed to be the right thing to do,
one of my favorite mods is the 4000 rpm govenor spring, and it took maybe 3-4 hours to install, and now its a rocket!! i cant believe how big a difference it made, from dog to jaguar!

you should slide the plate towards the front bumper. I ran a 6 plate for a while and then ground the stocker down to a 100plate. Do a search for a 100 plate real easy to grind. You will need to get some guages though because it turns up the fuel pretty good. I would imagine you might have a fuel delivery problem. Check the fuel pressure

thanks for the info. I did go back and adjust the star screw all the way to the front after sliding the plate and that really made a difference!!!!!!!!!! Was that the rite thing to do???

Yes that right....Your AFC housing should also be slid towards the back...If you think that made a difference, install a aftermarket plate and some 3k or 4k springs and you then have a truck.....Don't forget to install pyro and boost gauges when you start your mods..

All sounds good to me, i will move the housing back all the way and SE what that does. What # of plate do you suggest to install? Are the governor springs very hard to put in??? Also what should the timing be set at for what i have done already or should it be changed from the factory setting??

What was I thinking...Move your AFC forward..Sorry for the misinformation...Seems that 15 to 16 degrees of timing is safe on the head gasket.Installing the 3k spring are not that bad to install.Fallow the instructions, they are pretty straight forward. As for plates,I have a #10 but others have number eight,0 etc...Number #10 plates seem to be a general purpose plate.

Get gauges then read this http://www.cumminsdatabase.com/read.php?id=58
Might want to also eliminate the cat, they tend to plug up at 100k and really cut power.

Gauges, kill the silencer rings and dowel pin, slide the plate toward the front of the truck or modify the plate, or get a new one, if you dont have a boost elbow get one and turn it up to about 35 psi., exhaust(at least 4 inch), Tune the afc to your combination instead of just turning it all the way one way or the other, injectors (proper ones not marine 370s), timing bump to 16, 3 or 4 gsk( you can up grade the 3 to a 4 later on for like 20 bucks, but either way get valve springs) by then youd have a ton of heat and youd need air so a quick spool manifold and a good turbo would fix that
