Help!! Truck buckin in neutral

Just got back from a 2500 mile trip. At the very end of the trip when I would come to a stoplight and put the tranny in neutral and let the clutch out the truck would make and loud clunk and try to jump forward. If I hold the clutch in it goes away. This only happens in neutral with my foot of the clutch. Tranny has started to go into 1st and reverse hard also. Anybody had this happen to them. The tranny is a stock 5 speed with 190,000 miles on it.

Anybody have an idea where I should start with troubleshooting this. Is there a way to tell if the the hydraulics are bad?

If the hydraulics were bad you wouldn't be able to disengage the clutch. Try wiggling the shifter from side to side in neutral to fully take the tranny out of gear. I believe you are due for a rebuild.

After talking with a couple tranny guys I think you are right, time for a rebuild. What is the best way to go on this. I found a NV4500 out of a 2000 model in the local boneyard with 100,000 miles on it for $1100. If I get mine rebuilt who do you guys suggest I go with.

Thanks a lot for the help guys. I'm going to drop the tranny and have a look. What special tools would a guy need to rebuild this tranny, and where is a good place to get them, or is it worth having a ggod shop do it?

Wow, quad 4x4 is pretty expensive. I can get the tranny rebuilt for just what it would cost in parts at quad. Do you recommend any other good places to get a master rebuild kit with a main shaft. Also who do you recommend for a clutch. I'm not a high horsepower guy, 400 horse I might go to tops, and only tow max 12,000 lbs. Valair, Luk, Southbend, Haisley etc. I appreciate the input.

I have a loud clunk in my driveline starting out in 1st and sometimes in 2nd depending upon how much power goes to the wheels. (hard accelleration = louder clunk). This has been made worse with the addition of larger tires and suspension lift. I think it is just the axle wrapping a little more than in stock form. Have you made any alterations?

Yeah it is expensive but they have done all the research and do everything perfectly correct. I talked with Dan the gear man on several occasions... I ended up completely overhauling the transmission with their Torque-King mainshaft.... I will NEVER have to worry about fifth gear problems now and the shaft has a lifetime warranty on it. Read some of the reports he has written on these mainshafts on his site and it will open your eyes a bit.

Also, unless time is an issue I would give yourself a shot at doing the rebuild yourself. I downloaded the manual from quad and opened and rebuilt a manual for the first time... and I did it right lol!
