HELP Shut down solenoid fix
My 95 ram decided not to start . I needed to move my 14' cargo trailer to haul my Zero turn mower to mow a lawn. I tested everything and found the shut down solenoid was not working. I turned on the key and lifted it with my hand and the truck started. When I turn the key off the truck will keep running. So I turned off the key and pushed the plunger down to stop the truck.I had to restart the truck to get it close to my shop and had to lift the plunger again.
I found the truck had no power when restarted!!!
How does one clean up the shaft ?? what needs to be done to get it working again ???
Running the engine with the switch off ( did that damage something to make it have no power on a restart ) ???
help !!!!!

By no power, do you mean batteries drained, or the engine wouldn't hardly pull the truck?
Start by checking the lift and hold circuits, could be as simple as a relay went bad or could be as bad as a burnt out solenoid lift circuit. ( Usually when a 12 valve wont shut off it means the starter plunger has stuck and kept power to the lift solenoid, burning it out ( 70 amp ) )

Batteries are new and charged up.Relays check out ok. looks to me like the Shut down solenoid is sticking .last time I shut the switch off and stopped the truck by pushing down on the plunger the truck stopped. The truck had run a few minutes with the switch off till I got the plunged down and stopped the truck. On restart the truck did not have any power to move it self.

Most times when that happens it is a dirty or jammed solenoid. They don't go bad very often. Pull it off and thoroughly clean it. The rubber boot starts to deteriorate and will get pieces of junk up in the solenoid. Check wiring for corrosion also. The corrosion will go right up the wire under the insulation.

That should take care of you, easy fix 99 percent of the time.

Took everything apart and cleaned the plunger. The truck will now start but will not shut down with the switch. The plunger will lift when the switch is moved to start and will drop when the switch is turned to off, but the truck does not shut down . I`am open as to what I should try next .

I post every day on a garden tractor form . I give my time also to help others. on that form I can bring up a parts display to show what parts are needed and then explain how they work. I removed the plunger and spring and cleaned everything. There was some dirt on the plunger. I re-installed everything and the truck will start; the plunger will now lift and when the key is switched off the plunger will drop " BUT" the engine will not stop running! The spring seems to push the plunger down , so I don`t know what else could be affecting shut down ???

Did you notice any corrosion on the heim joint at the fuel lever?
Mine was rusty and the ball wouldn't pivot, wasn't to the point of not letting the spring over ride it, but was getting there. Past that, there isn't anything else I can think of that would stop it, unless the solenoid bracket is out of line or something else is interfering with the lever.
Thinking this out again, you say the lever drops, does it drop all the way and the truck still runs, or does it shut off when you manually push the lever down further?

The plunger drops what looks like all the way and the engine does not stop .I can pull up on the plunger and let it fall back and it still does not shut off every time . One in ten tries it will shut down .

If the truck does not shut off with the lever down, you probably need to adjust the length. With the lever unhooked and pushed down, the "ball joint" should slide right on, if it is to high, lengthen the rod, there is some adjustment.

Well guys I did get my truck fixed. I found that a boot of a Bob Cat shut off works perfect as a replacement for the one on my 95 truck. I found that the stud bracket that the controls the fuel (run and shut down) has a bolt to tighten it on the shaft from the bracket.I snugged up that bolt and then adjusted shut down using that bolt . The truck is working as it should now. I`am a happy guy. Thanks to all that gave me info as to what I should look for. Two thumbs up to you all. Thanks again ,later Don T
