Help.....fuel gauge issue/fuel tank ?

I am wondering if anyone else has this problem.

I just bought my truck with 34k. While driving home the fuel gauge went down to 1/4 tank so I went to fill it up. I started pumping and when it got to about 9 gallons it stopped the pump like it was full. I pulled the pump handle out and seen diesel in the filler neck. But fuel gauge is only saying 1/2 a tank. The truck has a 35gal tank. I decided to run the truck down under a 1/4 to see if the sending unit might be bad and the fuel light came on.

This is my first diesel but do you have to pump slow ?

Thanks guys !

Pretty common for the sender to get flaky.

About 65 bucks at the dealer if I remember correctly.

I've read on here that it's fairly common for the float to stick as well as the sender getting flakey, poke around here a bit and you'll find free fixes.
