HE351VE install and controller thread for 12 valve Cummins
I jus bought a Holset HE351VE turbo for $200. In this thread id like to post my progress as I install it and make my own controller. I think this will be a great modification and provided the know how I think any 12 valve owner could do it and do it affordably. I know Fleece has one available but $6-700 is too much for me to pay for it. That being said I welcome any knowledge and input from other members.

There are 4 wires going into the actuator on the turbo.
according to Chrysler they are labeled as such
Brown/Gray:Smart Power Relay Feed
Black:Ground
Brown/Violet:Actuator Hi Data Link
White/Light Green: Actuator Lo Data Link
What I am trying to figure out at the moment is if the actuator is controlled by a varied voltage or if its controlled by a pulse width modulation (PWM)

Data link hi and daa link low are both pulsed circuts. so the challenge now is coming up Pulse Width Modulator that can control it and then interfacing that with a sensor to tell it what it needs to do. do we have any electronics gurus in this forum?

Seriously, you might ask in the 3rd gen forum as well, lots of us are pretty good with duct tape, so no much with electrons......

Pat! Quit crackn me up like that....I'm trying to sound smart here lmao 3rd gen forum is a good idea ill do that as soon as I get a chance. And ill also link the 2 threads together. And stone the reason I'm trying to go electronic is the exhaust brake function I want keep that

What is the PWM range? From what hz to what hz. I ask because I'm an electrical engineer and design controls for oil rigs. I deal with alot of signal convertors, including some nice ones that use 0-10vdc input for a PWM output.......
If I have one with the correct PWM range it would be an easy experament.

therin lies the problem...i only know 1 guy that owns a 6.7 and hes 70 miles away so looking at his truck and connecting my MODIS to his turbo via labscope to measure Hz may take a lil bit. an ill also need to monitor actual voltage on the wires too but im pretty sure since its J1939 it'll be the standard 5 volts. be great if I could find someone in Knoxville here locally that i cud meet up with and measure the Hz. once i measure the Hz I will def post it here and lets see what you can come up with

hooked a lab scope up to a 6.7 and got a pw of 3.9 up to about 7.0ms but in reading over this post i see i shud have gotten it in hz....Son of a.......
On another note i am also taking Pats advice and looking into "the duct tape and baling wire controller" i am going to see if i can come up w a way to control the turbo with actuators and simple electronics

I don't know that it has to be lightning fast. Hi boost doesn't happen in the blink of an eye. Even if ur boost is "instant". Its still a second or 2 for full boost. Ill ask seller how fast actuator takes for full travel.
