Governor broken?
Hey guys,
Today I was driving down the highway, when the engine suddenly pulled itself up to 2500 rpm (from about 2400 rpm) and held the speed constant.
While limping it to a town, at one point the engine returned to idle with the pedal at the idle position and a "hard" feeling - aka could not be pushed.
I limped it into town, then the dealership (which while enthusiastic, didn't provide too much support). The throttle linkage moves freely. The engine stays pegged around 2500 rpm.
Looks like it is inside the P7100... I think.
I limped it home, as it wasn't overspeeding... the problem mostly went away, but throttle engagement isn't as smooth (the response is not linear with the pedal). Of course, I am concerned it will return, and also what is broken?
In what way should I approach this?
What is likely the cause?
The external linkage appears fine (the throttle cable is the new plastic sheathed type, linkage moves smoothly)... however, it will sometimes not return itself to the idle position.
Several folks at the dealer were suggesting a new injection pump, which seems a bit extreme to me.
What is the best/quickest/most reasonable way to go about this? I would like to have the truck on the road, or will, *gasp* be having to acquire a cheap crappy temp [or permanent] replacement vehicle.

Hope it's not the IP but the throttle return spring(s) could have came off or broke.
There are two, one inside the other that stretch inbetween the linkage and the power steering pump.
Hardware or autoparts store replacement will work.

The part of the linkage that connects to the throttle cable, I could hold full forward (top half - idle), while the engine remained at 2,500 revs.
I saw one return spring connected to that lever, is there another on the rear part of the linkage? (I am now 200 miles from the truck and won't see it until Monday).
