go to nv4500 or keep auto?

My 2500 Ram was my very first auto in over 40 years of driving, now I'd never buy another manual even if I have to spend $5k to build it up.
I love the convenience and being able to have one hand free if necessary.
Maybe I've just grown lazier too
Look at the new Duramax and most of the new semi trucks, they aren't even available with a manual.
I'm sure that the vast majority of new Rams are autos also.

Your truck has the 727 3spd transmission. I can't answer if it is worth it or not, because I don't know what you want to do with the truck. If you plan on drag racing it, then no, I would keep the auto.

You should really post this in the 1st Geb section, but oh well.

I have read that the real problem is not the nut on 5th gear but rather the harmonics of the engine while running 5th gear at low rpm. wears the unslpined portion of the shaft so the gear and nut comes loose. updated nuts only seem to be a bandaid of sorts. Other things I have read are instances of losing all but 4th gear for some unknown reason. Not sure what that is all about. Does not seem to be as big a problem as the 5th gear and nut issue though.
If I am off on this please correct me as I have not decided for sure what I am going to do on the swap. I am not looking forward to the down time dealing with the drive shafts either. mountain out of a molehill???
leaning towards auto right now, but I would love to hear from some of you that have built/upgraded autos.

I ordered the input from Six States Dist. They are easy to find..
I think i paid 149 bucks for the input. It's a easy job

I am trying to weigh all the options and expenses and information I have read on both trans. I want a 5spd., I think, but I am hesitant to convert due to the problems I have rad about with the nv4500.
I am considering a DTT trans or Goering if I keep the auto.
Maybe just a new converter and valve body as my trans. seems to be working as it should.
I absolutly -HATE!!!!!- the way the engine revs as I leave work in the morning up a steep grade. Engine governs out at 2200 and only running about 40 mphs!
It sucks!
I want to put in some bigger injectors and 3000gsk but to what end.
3000 rpm and 45mph!?!?!?
Co-worker behind me with a powerstroke and a 5spd. laughs and says to let him out in front of me in the morning so he doesn't have to wait for me to get up the hill.
Truck is a daily driver and I don't mind shifting gears.
I don't pull as much as I used to only around 7k to 10k once or twice a month.
What are some of your experiences with these two different transmissions.
Which do you perfer?
Any and all opinions appreciated.

i started my 5spd swap and haven't got enuff time due to 2 jobs but i just wanted a manual just because i like them better. also couldn't afford a good auto. i would make some adjustments in your afc if you haven't cause you should be able to move that truck pretty good.

Ive done the swap. Easy enough. The reason I did it was because I wanted a 5-speed but couldn't find one when I was looking for my truck so I got the auto. After about 20000 miles the tc started slipping. This was with just a plate and gsk. So in goes the 4500. Best mod so far. Fun to drive. I have since added 370s to the mix and it really woke the thing up.

95 automatic
The 95 will or could use several upgrades for the automatic. Not including the cooling lines. Which have the poor connections and can rub together and leak. First of all reverse is geared up so backing up with a trailer can really get hot. There is a big jump between each gear. My truck does not seem to even drop in rpms when the transmission shifts. Poor fluid coupling in the converter. Don't forget the shift into 4 gear and lockup at 45 or so. I hate that also.
My truck has similar mods also to yours. But not as many miles on it. If you don't tow then perhaps a automatic, g/b transmission would be my choice for an automatic. I would rather have a manual over any automatic. I don't care to hot rod or race my truck. I would never again buy an automatic. If you go the automatic then I would suggest g/b automatic, remove the check valve in the cooler lines, repair the cooling lines, get a temp gage. Also to change the 45 to 52 lockup in overdrive requires a different pcm . good luck

I would go with a DTT or Goerend, or other first rate rebuild and update. They are much tougher than the NV4500HD if done correctly.
Both those firms do it right! There are other top notch transmission shops that are much less expensive. Stop by your local off road truck center and ask around for references on a local transmission rebuilder. Then check them out, if you can eat off their stainless steel bench and they are willing to talk first rate options for clutches, steels, shafts, cages, converters, flex plates, etc., then you probably found a good one.
The 5 speed conversion kluges the truck, and will kill your resale value the day you decide to sell and move to something else.

And why would that be? Are you saying that the 5 speeds are worth significantly less, or is it that a truck that has had a transmission conversion is worth significantly less????
