go to nv4500 or keep auto?

I am trying to weigh all the options and expenses and information I have read on both trans. I want a 5spd., I think, but I am hesitant to convert due to the problems I have rad about with the nv4500.
I am considering a DTT trans or Goering if I keep the auto.
Maybe just a new converter and valve body as my trans. seems to be working as it should.
I absolutly -HATE!!!!!- the way the engine revs as I leave work in the morning up a steep grade. Engine governs out at 2200 and only running about 40 mphs!
It sucks!
I want to put in some bigger injectors and 3000gsk but to what end.
3000 rpm and 45mph!?!?!?
Co-worker behind me with a powerstroke and a 5spd. laughs and says to let him out in front of me in the morning so he doesn't have to wait for me to get up the hill.
Truck is a daily driver and I don't mind shifting gears.
I don't pull as much as I used to only around 7k to 10k once or twice a month.
What are some of your experiences with these two different transmissions.
Which do you perfer?
Any and all opinions appreciated.

First of all, what year is the truck. Does it have the 47rh, or 47re? My father has a built 47re, and it is NICE. I would keep the auto, and build it if I were you. Then when you build it, stomp that powerStroke.

I am not exactly sure what years the 47rh trans were in. I believe that is what I have.
Truck is a 95 with 217,000 miles on the clock and I believe it is the original trans.
I have updated all the cooling lines on it as well.

94-95 had the RH.

I had a bad experience with an auto leaving me stranded in the mountains, so I said never again, at least in a daily driver situation. So my vote is obviously for the NV4500 swap. That being said, if you are looking to race it, auto's are hard to beat. I'm casually looking for a 47RH 2wd for my 79 F-150, your's would be perfect . . .

Another vote for the swap. I did the swap on my 1996 dually, and I'm loving it. I bought a donor truck - made it much easier, then parted everything else out that I didn't need.

The trans had 289k miles on it... doubt it had the 5th gear fix, and doubt it ever had a fluid change. I put in a new south bend clutch and it works perfectly.

I've had more manual trans leave me stranded. I like my auto with the goerend VB/TC!

I just switched from an Auto to a manual truck. Some things are way cool, others, not so much. I do like being in control of when things get shifted, and lord knows, I think I can pull better than I could with my stock Auto. I bought Greenie for just a bit more than my Goerend tranny would cost, so that was a plus.

That being said, it does suck that boost dumps as you shift.........

For me, I will stay with my stick, but probably only because I never got a ride in a built Auto.

i would do the swap. i bought my cummins after going from a 5spd furd, but i still liked the 5spd! if you have the time money and tools to do it i'd do it in a heartbeat. im hating my auto, but like patdaly im sure there are some nice built auto's.

What transmission would be in my 89ctd auto 4x4? and would it be worth swapping to the manual trans?

With the number of miles on your trans I would highly recommend a full rebuild over just a VB and TC.

That said, the real value of a trans swap is the question of, is it worth it to you?

I have owned both and would not own a handshaker for anything other than heavy hauling. But that's because of my offroad, light towing and commuting use.

The swap is not real difficult, just takes time and money.

I put a 47re in m swap. I have a standalone vb & controller. I got the billet input with the 3 disk from g brothers.

I haven't had any problems with it n it has hard form shifts. I do miss stick but they can't keep up with the trans I have because there is no palse between shifts.

If I had to do it again I would like to try stick but I HATE SHIFTING STICK IN RUSH HOUR TRAFFIC and I get more out of my standalone to shift it any way I want. So I am staying with the auto...

What have you heard bad about the NV4500???? There is only one problem, and that's the 5th gear nut. Other than that it is superior to any slush box that ever came in a Dodge, IMO.
