gear set swap

gear set swap
looking to shorten the gears to 4.10. Question is this......
1. hood tag sais 3.50 front ratio, but no info on rear. In these trucks do they stagger the front and rear ratios a little like they did in the older ones? If so, what is the general ratio in the rear with a front of 3.50? The rear axle tag is non-existent and I haven't pulled the diff cover to count teeth yet.
2. I vaguely remember back several years when doing dana swaps that carrier size could limit gear ratio choices without carrier and/or case changes. Is the front dana 60 and rear dana 70 in these rams like that, and if so, will I be able to swap in 4.10's without carrier changes?
3. Who is the latest and greatest for gear sets?
Thanks for the help guys....

Nobody "staggers" gears front to rear. You might see gearsets off *very* small amounts like 3.54 and 3.55 F&R, but comparatively it is not even worth mentioning.
If you have a 3.50 up front, you have a 3.50 out back.
Your front is a Dana 60 I believe, and I think the carrier break is between 4.10 and 4.56 so you should be able to go to 4.10's without a carrier change.
If you have a 70 in the rear, I don't know about the carrier break there.
You sure you wanna go to 4.10's? That's a pretty big jump from 3.50's IMHO unless you have really gone up in tire size.

I do most of my driving at 45-60 mph and am tired of toggling OD on and off all the time to maintain the proper RPM range. Also, lower gears would help out the lower end a little, and I tow alot as well. Currently have 35's on and might upsize to 36's shortly. Right now at 55 mph, I tach 1425 OD TC locked.......3rd TC locked 2000 RPM. One gear too high, the other too low.......see what I mean? If I went to 4.10's, 55 would make 1700-1800 RPM OD TC locked.
I would consider 3.73's, but at only a 7% over advantage, it's not going to make the impact desired, like the 29% of 4.10's. 4.10's are DEFINITELY on the outside limits, I would much prefer 3.90's, but we all know the story there!!!
Thanks for the info on carriers.....

that's originally what I thought, but was thrown off when the hood sticker listed the front axle ratio as "3.5"?????????? Anyway, they're coming out, I'll count the teeth then!!
I will tell you that when I had her on the rack doing some trans pressure testing, I forgot I still had it in four wheel drive..the front tires appeared to be spinning a little faster, but who knows, one tooth shouldn't have been that visible. Might have been beer induced.
Thanks for the help..as usual.
