fuel shutoff solenoid
I have a 97 cummins 2500 & reviewd previous posts but none like this:
had intermittent no-start going to complete no-start within 2 weeks. thought solenoid out again as 1st replaced prox. 9 yrs ago due to not turning off with key. reviewed your technical posts & found my solenoid would go to hold when i helped it( i had already unbolted & was inspecting it on the valve cover. got a relay from NAPA & also surveying blue fusible wire at battery, decded to replace it also. installed solenoid with new fusilble link & relay & saw that crank position was working but would not stay in hold position under cranking with key, so no real start( cranks & dies).. then removed solenoid & laid as earlier on valve cover & rehooked wiring back up. I am back to same as before where i can help the solenoid to the hold position after the key is turned on and then solenoid shuts off with key. I then thought it needed to be grounded better so i reinstalled solenoid with one bolt & same as before. it will pull in crank position but will not go to hold under cranking. if i manually hold the fuel lever it will run. at first i thought maybe a bad ground but why does it switch from one way of working to the other by simply installing &/or removing the solenoid from its bracket. I did finally take solenoid & hook it staight to a battery & it works in both pull & hold by hooking red & white wires to hot & grounding black wires on solenoid...............i guess this has been my diesel test & im failing, any thoughts appreciated

wiring sounds suspect in the wiring harness to the sol.
Ring the connections with a DVM and change positions of the harness while doing so- I suspect you'll find either the pins in the connector (truck side) are in need of cleaning/assistance or the harness itself has a broken wire or 2.

duhhh]found my problem-- went back thru all the excellent tech tips last nite & started from the top today & fuel rod adjustment is critical, when solenoid installed wouldnt go to hold because of improper adjustment & when solenoid was removed & just held down on plenum, i guess not a good ground to go into pull mode,,,many thanks guys for the post on previous solenoid problems & making me think things thru ,,,instead of like when i was 7 & took my rear axle apart on my MONTGOMERY WARDS bicycle & 3 weeks later DAD was home & put it back together for me, alway made sure from then on how things came apart.
