Fuel Shut-off solenoid problem (long)
About a week ago my fuel shut off solenoid went south on me. Darn thing smoked like crazy, thought the truck was gonna burn down. Anyways I replaced it and the truck wouldnt start. Figured out it was the fusable line from the battery. Tried saving some of the link and it worked for a few days. I ended up having to replace it with an inline fuse. At first I put in a 20 amp and it promply blew that one. Put in a 25 amp and its been working for a couple days. Well today I went out to start the truck to go to work and it would not start. I checked the fuse and it looks good. I can manually engage the solenoid and the truck will start and turn off. What could be wrong now??

Thanks in advance

Glen

Try checking the wires going to the sol. One is ground, one is for start, and one is for run. I don't know which is which, but if you can pull it up and it stays up, that part is working. There are relays that take care of the power to start and run on it. I have not had any experience with them so I won't attempt to tell you where they are. Hopefully someone else who has more smarts than me will chime in.
Tom

Re:Fuel Shut-off solenoid problem (long)
I didn't have the exact problem with the fuseable links in my '95 truck. I replaced my fuel pump solenoid first, still had the problem of it turning over but no fire, only if i manually pushed the solenoid up to get it to fire.So I eventually replaced the relays for the fuel pump solenoid. There are 2 relays mounted on a little bracket mounted on the firewall above the engine but right below the weatherstripping for the hood.I took mine off and they were corroded,I replced them and it has been working great ever since.I bought mine at my local dealership and it comes with the 2 relays already mounted to the bracket. Just unplug the old relays, unbolt the relay bracket, bolt the new one in,put the plugs back on then away you go.Hope this works for you heavyg.

You can manually push the solenoid up into locking position, had to do it myself for about a month. Just turn the key to the on position, reach under the solenoid to where you feel the bottom of the plunger and pull it towards you until it clicks. Its simple enough but its a pretty good hastle after a few times of doing it in the rain >. What ended up being my problem was a corroded wirethat was kinda hidden. Trace all of your wires and make sure theyre all making good contact as well as your relays
Good luck
Wheels
