Fuel plate adjustment

I want/need to back my plate off. While at sea level (during the week) I have no smoke or EGT issues.

On the weekends while towing (3,000-8,000' altitude) my fully loaded 40' fiver will dump A LOT of black smoke and my EGT's will climb to 1,400 in the blink of an eye. I have plenty of HP and torque that I am unable to use due to the high EGT's.

When my plate was originally installed (by me) I made the mistake of sliding it all the way forward. I have since moved it back just forward of center. I think it still needs to be slid back further.

I do not want to keep opening it up and putting it back together so I will ask the following question.

Would 1/16" or 1/8" movement per adjustment be considered a radical adjustment or do you think this would be a good place to start?

Thanks,
Don

the starwheel will get rid of the smoke at take off. if it is smoking bad once you get moving then you need a bigger turbo or slide the plate back further. i'm guessing you have the wastegate blocked if not that should be the first thing you should do

I honestly don't feel much difference moving it full forward, or to the middle, but it affects mpg alot

I would start with the smaller increments. A little goes a long way. You could also check the governor arm and set it different so that you get more defueling at higher rpms (move the arm up the plate). This will be at the sacrifice of increasing low end fueling and probably more smoke on take off.

Also, have you cleaned your air filter lately. It's easy to go too long between cleanings. Just a thought.

Also, change the four screws on the AFC to socket head screws and get a long round tipped hex driver for a 3/8" ratchet. I can have my AFC cover off, adjust the plate and back on in under 5 minutes easy. I can sneak the hex driver under the fuel lines so don't have to take off the intake horn or disconnect the fuel lines. That was a major hassle.

MPG more with forward or back?

I do not have the waste gate blocked. It will hit 40 psi easily with just the elbow.

I moved the AFC back and it seems to have lowered the smoke on takeoff but I'm after reduced EGT's.

your turbo is too small if your hitting 40psi that turbo is only good for 30-35psi
if you going to tow with it i would suggest getting twins. just use your hx35 for your secondary and get a big turbo like an s400 for the primary. piers sells everything so that you can use that turbo in a twin setup

The entire performance package including the re-worked turbo was purchased from Mark at Piers.

I usually run between 20 and 30 psi when towing. It does have the ability to hit 40 fairly easy.

I hate to think of the domino effect and $$ of the twins. What all is required to complete a twin set-up? Intake, Downpipe/exhaust, new exhaust brake, intercooler and obviously which turbos??

From a previous reply I guess my existing turbo will be adequate for one of the two?

I'm listening.

If you are making 40 psi then your governor arm is to low. Adjust to make 34psi.

You're making way too much boost for a stock turbo. We have about the same set-up. I have no EGT issues until my boost pressure passes 35psi. Then EGT's climb fast. Try adjusting the boost elbow screw a bit.
