Fuel Lines

Just found this site earlier this week. Lots of great info and knowledgable folks on here.

My question is: I just replaced my supply and return fuel lines on my 97 2500 (220,000 miles), do I need to bleed the high pressure lines? I cracked the low pressure fitting on the filter and hit the hand pump a few times to clear it out. The truck started right up so I'm not real concerned, but just curious because the Dodge manual does suggest bleeding the system whenever you work on it.

I'm chasing down a low power condition that only shows up when I'm towing....

Thanks for any and all replies!

Re:Fuel Lines

I am not sure about your bombs, Cowboy, but here are a couple suggestions: first, of course, check the filter. Next, check the linkage on the wastegate. If the line from the AFC to the turbo is rubber, you might try pinching it off.

Also, one thing that happened to my truck that resulted in low towing power was that the stock fuel plate ws not installed straight. The slight "cocking" of the plate meant that everything was smooth, the boost was about right, and all was well unloaded, but as soon as the truck needed more fuel to pull, the boost would drop to about 10, and I couldn't get over about 65mph towing into the wind.
good luck
george

Re:Fuel Lines

The fuel filter has about 6k on it, but I will change it and see if that helps. Will also check the wastegate.

My engine is completely stock. The only upgrades are an AFE filter and 4in. exhaust. It runs fine unloaded, but when I tow and hit a hill, no power...lose speed but the rpm's stay up. I used to be able to tow the Cascade passes here in the northwest at 60-65mph. Took the trailer (8000#) out last week and creeped over at 35mph and overheating. I'm putting in a new fan clutch and thermastat that will hopefully solve the overheat condition. One other note....believe it or not, I am still running the stock auto trans with 220,000 miles on it. I'm sure that's part of the problem.

Re:Fuel Lines

YEP. The tranny is slipping. It will get worse. I redid my tranny for an ATS setup at...220,000 miles...perhaps that is the magic number?
george

Re:Fuel Lines

Man, I sure envy you, Cowboy....I'm wantin a DTT fix in the worst way, but can't justify it until my slushbox starts slippin. Guess I'll just get some 370s to take care of that! ;D

Re:Fuel Lines

John was right and I'm glad you went the way you did. The tranny was "all" you trouble. Probably the heat thing too.

..Preston..

Re:Fuel Lines

Yep...I suspect the tranny was a major contributor to the heating problem. I did replace the thermastat with the one that stops the constant temp cycling. It's nice to drive down the road and see the thing stay at a stable temp.

Now if the 21st would hurry up and get here, I can get that new tranny put in. ;D

Thanks for all the replies. And thanks to John for the tip on the Northwest bombers site, I'll check it out!
