ive been noticing people on the forum saying to remove the fuel beneth the prefilter. is this for colder weather,emmision,ect. this is on a 97 5.9.what is the down side seeings how this is a fractory install.should it be removed. thank you all for all the info for helping my stock underpowered slt.i love it but after riding in the newer models it has a lot to be desired.

 

Number one, the heater is almost entirely ineffective, so it can be removed without a downside even in consistently frigid temperatures. Number two, removing it eliminates a few more places that can start to suck air when things go wrong (and they will). Removing it hurts nothing, and eliminates a problem point.

 

thank you jstone. i do live in cold weather idaho and thats what i was concerned. is it better to remove it completly or just unplug .

 

oh one more thing does it help at all with performance

 

Leaks are caused by the wires to the heater melting the seal.
If your heater isn't leaking just unplug it or remove the smaller relay next to the shutdown relay.
You really only need to remove the heater entirely if it's already leaking.

As long as you use anti-gel additive in the winter you don't need the heater.
Fuel station diesel is supposed to be treated for your winter climate but I personally don't trust it and would rather use additive than walk.
