fuel gauge

My brother has a 98 12v and it having problems with his fuel gauge not working right. He has a lift on it but I don't see how this would make the gauge read wrong. He said that he has about 300 miles on a tank and it is reading empty. Is this a bad fuel gauge or something else? thanks dave

All that is wrong is the fuel tank sending unit is giving up the ship. Very very common. I think if you try going to www.dodgeram.org you should find a page there that tells you all about it. They are cheap and wear out way too soon. You can also do a search here for sending unit and find a lot of info.

I looked at the web site but couldn't really find any place where it talks about the problems with the fuel gauge. So since this is a common problem what so you do to fix it? Just put in a new sending unit, I am guessing that it is in the tank? thanks

The sending units do go bad VERY commonly, per the dealer. Mine went out, but it was not due to wear. It just went. Use that part number listed in the link, because according to my dealer this is a "non-standard" part and they have to order it. The computer parts book only lists the whole assembly, which costs over $300.

Also when ordering get a new gasket/ o-ring for the assembly. I did not and it had stretched over time and did not go back right. At some point I need to do it all over again and replace that gasket.
