I have a 94 CTD

I fixed the KDP sometime ago and installed a new crankshaft oil seal. I've noticed a small oil leak from the crankshaft seal.

Question: is there any way to pull the old seal without removing the front cover; if so, is it worth the time and effort (vic. removing the cover)?

 

Take the fan off and the dampner....drill two holes at 10 and 2 o clock in the seal. Then insert a screw in both holes and pull the old seal out. clean the seal housing up real good with brake cleaner etc. The key to a good seal installation on these engines is to use the clear plastic guide sleeve that comes with the seal. Keep the guide on the seal and drive in the new seal flush with the front of the housing. Then just pull the guide out and your set to go. Torque the dampner to 92 ft lbs. and install fan.

 

Hey bobw! Glad you fixed the kdp,as far as the seal I cannot imagine trying to get it out with out taking the cover off,you may have not gotten the shaft clean,maybe not gotten seal in straight,and if the plastic guide slipped off in installation you might have scored the seal,if the shaft was not grooved,which I have not seen before except on tractors and dozers which work in very dusty conditions,You'll just have to go back in there agian,Sorry!! If the shaft is grooved,cummins has a seal kit for the grooved shaft,also they do recommend puting threadlock around the outer seal edge,again I have never seen one leak around the outer edge but you might give it a good going over once you get down to the cover,before you pull it off,when you have the room then to do so, Goodluck and hate to hear you having trouble,Rick Hey looks like monty beat me to the punch,might try his way first,I just never tried it that way,since I was so close at that point!

 

Forgot to add..when you get a new crank seal from Cummins...a piece of paper will come with it with pics showing how to drill the seal and pull it out. Have done about 4 ISB's like this....works like a charm.

 

When I did my KDP I installed the seal after I put the timing cover on. It's do-able but be prepared to swear a bit. Not much room to swing a hammer. Just don't swing it at the fender or door or something else. ;D
