Fix 12V or replace with a 24V?

My buddy has a 96 12V 3500 4x4 truck. Motor was just rebuilt and has some goodies on it. Just recently found oil in the coolant. He put on a new head gasket, and had the head decked again (head was worked on before when it was rebuilt) and it blew oil in coolant again after 100 miles. He is fed up. What could be the problem? He's heard that maybe the motor has so much compression that the weak leak is the head gasket. He wants to trade his motor for a stock higher mileage 24V. What issues will he have doing this?

Fix the 12v, be easier than swapping. Have you checked the oil cooler? Get that pressure tested, as that could be why you are swapping fluids.

Forgot to mention, we checked the oil cooler in a tank of water and air hose. No leaks. He did mention that he did not retorque all the studs for this 2nd head gasket. He couldnt get to them cuz of the fuel lines. Any other suggs?

Take the fuel lines off and do a proper retorque. Short cuts rarely pay off.

Trading for a 24 valve would be trading down for even more problems.

Besides the obvious, what all would be needed?

ECU?

Harness?

Are the motor mounts the same?

Frame?

Gauge cluster?

Bill, I LOVE the fact that you chose DTR as your home - I wish I could keep you in my pocket.

What issues will he have doing this?
Was what I was referring to. Weak fuel delivery system, prone to failure injection pump and electronics that the 12 valve
doesn't have would be the issues for me that would make it better to stick with the 12 valve.

I dont trust testing the oil cooler, I would replace it to make sure before swapping motors or anything crazy.

What else would be needed to do this though? (Out of curiosity)

Completely, totally agree.

Just have your friend run it a BIT less than 1000 BHP and he should be okay...
