five speed bound up!!
got a call from my brother he drives a 97 one ton 4x4 with a cummins in it has about 150k miles and while towing his gooseneck trailer over mt hood it leaves him stranded. he said he was in third gear in his five speed od trans pulling a five percent grade when he saw the 4x4 lite flicker on and off and a loud whine apeared. he saw a pull off a couple of hundred yards ahead and thought he would shift to second and pull off. every thing came to a stop quickly and he could not get the trans out of gear . he called me to come and fetch his pu. when i got there i towed him off the road after two hours of flagging traffic with no officer to be found . i loaded his pu on the gooseneck and he drove his old farm pu he was hauling to central ore. now i have this sucker in my shop need to start looking tommorrow. trans or transfere case or both??? he saw smoke come out from shifter boot when he came to a stop. oil dripping from underneath pu. any pointers would help. got home to dark to look at any thing . is either one not bad to rebuild ? good manuals on them are..... i do my own wrenching mostly early gm. thank you

i have had them hang up in 5th but never 3rd or second. it sounds like you have some problems. i would pull the shifter and see if you just have it hung up. and it will let you smell the gear oil to see if it is burnt. i can not figure out why the t case flickered, that has me stumped. sound like you are going to have to just keep pulling it apart till you find the problem. it is not a common one i can tell you that.

have not got it unloaded yet off the trailer will have to get my chores done on the farm here before bringing it into the shop . it has a nv4500 and a np241 dho transfere case. jumped in her and started her up stick feels ok but trans is in two gears i believe. noise must be bearing out in trans. or transfere case . guess i will start pulling it out towards the end of the week. still looking for good book on trans to overhaul it. also being told that if oil ran low on hard pull could be input and outputs welded together , will check oil levels see if it is low before yanking it out thanks for any replies.
