First post and a Question
I just found this site yesterday and figured I'd join and see what the place was all about. My truck has a K&N air filter on it and I am looking to replace it with a filter that is basically on open element style that wouldn't be in the airbox. Does anyone make a kit that comes with new inlet piping for the turbo. Or, is it something I will have to fab myself. I have seen the Old Smokey BHAF mount on the TDR but, I would prefer a non-enclosed setup. Basically, I just want to hear the turbo. I rode in a 98 that had a filter setup like this and I fell in love with the way it sounded. Thanx for any help!

Re:First post and a Question
If your airbox is like mine, and I think It is. Just take the airbox out of your truck and only use the faceplate and rod that mounts the filter to the hose. You can use your existing K&N that you have now for this. I ran mine like that for a long time and many other first gens on here are too. I have just recently switched to the RE-0880 K&N open element.

Re:First post and a Question
If you would like more turbo noise, you could also take the silencer ring out of the inlet side of the turbo. I am not sure if your truck has one, but if it does, after removal you will hear a little more turbo ;D ;D

Re:First post and a Question
Wish it was that easy, but the 1st gens with the H1C turbo do not have a silencer ring. Also, one of the reasons why a 2nd gen trucks turbo is so much louder is the mounting location of the filter. Ours on the 1st gen are down by the pass.side of the radiator.

Re:First post and a Question
I am currently running an Old Smokey BHAF mount with a K&N - you can hear the turbo quite well and it does breath better. I put it on about the time I did my last oil change so I will have to wait for an oil analysis to see how well it works. Inspection of the intake show no deposits. ;D ;D
Bob

I am running the K&N in a modified factory airbox.
The turbo screams, especially with an open exhaust and turned up pump.
http://www.swampfoxcustoms.com/airbox.JPG
I used a rotary tool to open up the side of the box and then made the panels from fiberglass to go to the back of the headlight valance.

Re:First post and a Question
On my 97 i just cut out several 1 inch holes evenly spaced on the side of the airbox with a rotary tool. I have a K&N and I can definately hear the turbo. Your setup sounds similar to mine and its not hard to do. might wanna give it a shot.

Re:First post and a Question
As Okie said the 1st gens have different filter canisters. In our rigs the we have drum air filters (much better than brick IMHO) stock and it is upfront behind the headlights. The Ol Smokey setup is pretty trick, I'v been lookin at that one as my 93 doesn't have the center bolt to hold the filter on so, I can't just go open element. >

Ah well, We'll figure somethin out.. Might have to go to the wreckers for a 92 intake pipe..

Hey Okie how did you mount the RE 0880 in your fender? Courious as Scotty and I were wrestling with how to make a system for the first gens...

J-eh
