A few porblems with a friends 96 1-ton 5-spd
A family friend has a 96 5-spd with 136k on it and it has a few little problems.
Problem #1
First, the clutch is finally going out. He wants to upgrade to something better than stock but has no plans of bombing the truck in any way(unless I can talk him into it)
Is upgrading a waste of money seeing as how it will continue to be a stock engine? Should he just stick with a factory clutch?
But if he still wants to upgrade what would be a good clutch to go with?
Problem #2
Hard starter. The truck will crank and crank unless you give it about 1/4-1/2 throttle and when it fires up you have to hold the throttle for a few seconds to get the idle to even out. From looking through the archives it points to a bad fuel return line but if anyone has any other ideas, Im all open.
Here is the odd problem...
When his truck is running, his windshield washer jets suck in air. Both of them. If you stand a few feet away from it it almost sounds like a turbo whistle but its the jet nozzles whistling from the air being pulled into them.
Anyone have any idea on that one?
Thanks a lot!

Can't help on the clutch.
You are probably right about the return hose.
Good read> http://www.cumminsforum.com/forum/94...m-writeup.html
On the washers it sounds like the seal at the back of the hood is out of place or missing.

A quality after market clutch from South Bend or any other quality builder would prolly be in the same price range as a clutch from a dealer. After busting two from Auto Zone and one from Blumenthals (unknown house brand) I'd recommend against them. Saving a few bucks up front will cost him more than it saved when they break. I like South Bend, but an OEM is good for a non-bombed engine.

I think this would be the best bet...

Any objections?

Clutch should be good, just make sure you get the one for the 94 up with a NV4500.
He needs to verify his fuel pressure. P pump trucks like a little throttle to pop off right away, but they should stabilize the RPMs right away as well. I would verify his fuel pressure, check Pre-filter, fuel filter first.
