external voltage regulator, check engine light???
So I do the external voltage regulator mod and it works great brought the output up from 13.8 to 14.5v, but now I can't get my check engine light to go out, I read the articles that say it should not be on but mine won't go out, still throwing the same codes for field voltage????

This is just my theory but since the ECM controls alternator output, it sees the output voltage from the alternator. THe ECM then tries to regulate the output like its programmed to but when it tries to signal the alternator it get no response. The ECM then illuminates the CE light signalling a problem in the charging circuit.
I don't know how to trick the ECM to believe its controlling the alternator. I hope someone else has done this mod.

stock wires
well the stock voltage regulator was sort of working puting out 13.7 volts, so I lft the harness there just turned the tabs up and pushed the alternator harnes away from the alternator, figure if the external VR ever goes out then the stock one should get me home. BUt to answer your question no they are not shorted and there is nothing near tham that could cause them to short out, and they are covered with tape. I think the question should have been how do you trick the ecm to think it is providing voltage to the field?
A idea I had but am not to crazy about is putting 4 10wat resistors in parrellel, I am not sure of the math but my electircal engineer dad figured it out. but then I have 4 hot resistors under the hood drawing voltage. Another idea of getting a bad alternator pulling the armature out and just hooking up the field somewhere to trick it. But again not real crazy about that idea either. It seems like there should be an easy way, other than just cutting the check engine light wire to the dash.
