So I changed my oil yesterday, put in what I am pretty sure was 11 qts. of Rotella, and this morning after it sat all night, before I started it up I checked the oil level. It was almost 1/2" above the upper "safe" level. So I figured I had overfilled it, and this afternoon I removed the oil filter with the intention of dumping out about a half quart. But the filter barely had any oil in it--maybe one inch of oil in it--it wasn't nearly full. I poured it out--not much came out, and reinstalled the filter. But I got to thinking maybe the engine wasn't overfull--maybe the extra oil that showed on the dipstick should have been in the oil filter.

Anybody got any comments or suggestions?

 

Did you start it and let it run a bit so as to fill up the filter?

 

I always fill the new filter with oil before I install it.

I ran some errands yesterday and checked the oil this morning--it was right on the spot correct. So I am guessing it was a temp malfunction of the anti-siphoning valve.

 

3 American gallons Im always right on, and yes fill the new filter before installing about 1 quart out of the 3 gallons, cheers.

 

3 gallons is 12 quarts.
My Shop Manual calls for 11 quarts.

 

I always put in 2 and a half then check and usually don't have to add any or just a bit after starting up. That includes filling up the filter.
