Engine Noise

The other day I was with a friend who also has a 97 12 valver. While looking over each others trucks we had both come to the conclusion that mine at idle and overall driving is much quieter than his. Thinking that something may be wrong with one of them, we went to another friends house with essentially the same truck to see how loud his was. Well, three of us now have come to the conclusion that mine is just a quieter running cummins than normal. I have also noticed at times when another cummins drives by it also seems louder than mine. Has anyone ever run into this or do I just have way too much time on my hands. ???

Re:Engine Noise

I have to agree with you. My cousins 95 is a lot quieter than mine but my friends 98 12v is louder. It don't much matter to me but I have noticed it.
DM01

Re:Engine Noise

Could be just a difference in timing or something. How is the mileage between the two both overall miles and MPG?

Re:Engine Noise

Richard,

I am new to the CTD engine, but not to diesels. My last diesel that was in need of timing--mine was way retarded--made twice the racket. While I adjusted the timing, the loudness dropped like a rock in seconds. That was an 'ole 6.9 ford. Now, I cannot do the timing on these CTD's. Too complicated. But, ask your buddies if they've ever timed their trucks. Have you? Is your idle set lower? Ask about mileage?
My guess its either timing or idle speed adjustment.
If it were me, I'd wish mine was louder!!

Richard,

Long time not talk. But timing will definetly effect loudness. It is also true of gassers. Is your cat off, and your buddies cats still installed. That will make some difference too. Also, valve adjustment makes them louder.

Gary

Re:Engine Noise

Mine runs smother and quiter than any other I have driven. I think that the valve train, pump and timing have alot to do with this. I dont think that there is any serious problem with an engine being louder or quiter, all I care about is that my little CTD is one pulling SOB.

Re:Engine Noise

OK, Here's the stats on all 3 trucks, all of us have factory exhaust, all of us have our idle speed adjusted the same within 100+-rpm, none of us have adjusted our valves,or had our pumps retimed, and all have between 125k to 145k for mileage. All of us now are going to adjust valves, pump timing, and readjust idle to as close as possible and try again. Maybe we do have too much time on our hands... ;D ;D
