Engine Cleaning
After much review of the KDP stories and thoughts of catastrophe on the road, I've decided to perform the tab repair. First, I need to clean 6 years of crud off the engine. I would like to know what the members do to clean their engines. Pressure clean with water, gunk, sovent spray with air compressor????? Also, what areas need protection, alternator, turbocharger, ????

Let me say that this is a great site. This is my first diesel and I have had a long learning curve. Thanks to the members here, I have learned quite a lot. Thank you all for any input.

Re:Engine Cleaning
I will just normally get the engine warm, not hot, and spray it down with Simple Green. let it set a few minutes and then hose off the crud. That stuff works pretty good and is not unusually nasty to the environment.

Re:Engine Cleaning
I didnt really do a whole lot. I have tabed both of our trucks. All I really did was take everything apart. Fan, Fan shroud, Bottles, Balancer, fan pully, all that good stuff. Then cleaned the housing cover with break/parts cleaner. I used peramtex and CRC. doesnt matter as long as its a break cleaner. Got in real good around the edges with a screw driver and a rag. Came up pritty good and fast. Then took the cover off and doused it with more break cleaner in and out to remove all the oil for putting the new seal in. (That seal is a pain in the *** by the way). I think it took 11hours the first time and 7 the 2nd time. Each truck took about 1 to 1.5 cans of break cleaner. Total cost between the gasket, seal, cleaner, locktight, kdp, and gasket goo was like 60$ or so.
Hope this helps some
Chris
