Driveline issue/Vibration

Hi guys,

well this whole thing started in august when I got the great Idea to buy a almost new Skyjacker lift kit. I bought it for $400 and I traded a junk minibike for it. about $300 later in parts that were missing I have a complete kit.

So late august and early september I am putting this lift on my truck. After many small but workable issues it is all together. About 3 weeks later the Carrier bearing is toast.

Two days later I put a new one in. ( I drove it on with a hammer and pipe because I don't have a press ) all problems seemed fix. It had a minor vibration.

mid November: Carrier Bearing pops out of rubber. So I popped it back in and shimmed the bearing so the drive line is in a straight line. From what I am reading this is bad.

about a week ago the rubber just ripped to shreds. I have been running the truck and popping the bearing in. It still pops back in but it will pop out after x amount of miles. I try not to run it if it pops out. I got a new bearing and I need to put it in tomorrow and get it fixed because I have to go about 45minutes away on Christmas day.

My lift is 5". From what I am reading you want the tailshaft of the tranny and the Pinion shaft of the rear to be parallel. The way my truck is now I have the pinion shaft pointed upward diagonally toward the tranny. I put the shim in that came with the rear add a leaf.

I don't know what to do. Do you think I should take that shim out so the two ends of the shaft are parallel?

Input is really appreciated

Thank you and happy Holidays

u joints shud have no more than 3* of angle on them to get good life out of them. what you might try is angling the pinion up to ease the strain on the carrier bearing. summit sells wedges you can install between the axle bracket and the leaf pack also make sure your driveline yokes are phased correctly

and you have my sympathy on your girlfriends car..... i had one....NEVER again what a pile of $#!T

Hi,

So I have wedges in already.

The phasing on the yokes might be an issue. each end of the yoke should look the same correct? Cause I know you can put it together 2 different ways.

I will look at that.

The wedges I have came with the add a leafs. The pinion is on like a direct straight angle towards the tranny. Im thinking it may have too much upward angle and the U joints are not "working".

Thank you,

And yea those jettas kinda suck. I have one as well as my girlfriend. The stupid reverse gear glitches.

lucky you mine had power windows that went down one day and then said F you when i told them to go back up. 16 wires coming out of the regulator too...***
as far as phasing the driveline make sure the u joints are all clocked the same on the shaft. if the slip yoke has been installed incorrectly it can cause a vibration due to this also be sure to check them all for any binding or tight spots. do i presume correctly by shimming the carrier bearing you lowered it down off of the crossmember

Also check the condition of the yoke in the rear axle. Mine spread about 1/32'' and wouldn't hold a u-joint tightly. Replaced the yoke and vibration was gone. Good lookin truck-give a shout if you're up near Binghamton--always up for bs-n and tossing back a cold one

Hi guys,

Well today i threw it back together. I think the first time I did not press the bearing on correctly. so i took my shims out from the bearing cause the driveline angle looked funny. Now it is almost a straight shot. maybe a few degrees off.

Hope it works, If not Im going to build a one piece shaft. Dad is a welder by trade so he will build it and I will take it to a shop to balance it for me.

Thanks for the input.

You guys wouldn't believe what I got the truck for. The only rust on it is that front drivers side fender. I already put another tranny in it and right now I slipped the torque converter..... I had no fuel plate and with stock tires it was great. When i lifted it and put them 37"s under it it did not like to go with a trailer. needless to say it is pretty much stock horsepower except for build 30lbs of boost with the boost elbow. and it still slips the TC

You guys know of a cheap performance converter? I don't care if I have to get a new one in like a year or two. I just want one that will hold around 300 or so HP. it sucks not being able to pull trailers at a decent speed. It is so hilly around here.

Thank you
