Does it take a genious

If you want to set the timing, just pull the pump gear and rotate the engine back a little. OK, sounds easy. It really ain't too bad. Go to your truck, find the "CPL" number and go here to find out what your timing should be: http://www.piersdiesel.com/TechPTiming.htm. Once you have that, you need to find #1 top dead center, mark your harmonic balancer, pull #1 delivery valve, set your plunger to what you want for timing, pull the pump gear, then rotate the engine back to TDC (your mark) and reassemble. It really isn't too hard. I was looking for instructions but didn't find them. I am sure somebody else will know where the instructions are.

It doesn't take a genius but it takes some somewhat expendsive tools. Most people will be money ahead to let someone else do since it usually only needs to be done once.
Good instructions here-
