is there a actual diff in the pump bodies? have access to one and curious if its really worth the time to mess with changing over.

No difference in pump bodies.
You can actually get that "little" 160 pump flowing a good amount of fuel.

I have always heard that the 215 pumps have a "timing advance" mechanism inside that bumps timing a little bit as the RPMs rise. Not sure if this is true or not, but worth looking into.

The 215 pumps do not have dynamic advance, they do retard when going to full rack travel.

Cams, plungers and flyweights are the big differences between the 215 and the 160/175 pumps. Cam in the 215 has a slower ramp on the back side, but starts bringing the plunger down sooner than the little pumps, which aides in refill time. The retard notch in the plunger also helps in that aspect. Flyweights are supposedly lighter than the other pumps, which is why you can get more RPM out of the same gsk in the 215's.

The way I read it is that he was asking if the actual P-Pump bodies was different as in mounting and size. Maybe I am wrong, dont know.
Why is it alot of the big diesel shops prefer the 160 pumps over the 215s?

guess i was unclear.
what i was getting at does the 215 have larger plungers, more flow than the 160. i realize externally they are about the same. Was trying to figure out what the difference is. if it would aid in lowering EGT's and if its something necessary for me to do to reach 500 horse.

Im curious to find out if the injection pressure is any different. Seems like the folks talking higher mileage numbers are running the 215
my mileage has been abysmal since the get-go.

I think these engines are running below there design efficiency 160-215 HP vs 275 HP ] adding some fuel in many cases adds millage , I red for some time now that mild injector upgrades have shown increase in millage .
I do know , but suspect that its not higher injector pressure , but volume .

Injection pressure makes no difference because it is limited to what pressure the injectors pop off.

Yes...This debate over the smaller pumps has been going on for a long time..The 215 are different internally but already have the larger DV and different barrels and cam....But yet guys claim to get 600HP and 11 second runs from the 160,but I don't know if this is true...Drop a larger set of DV,injectors and rack plug and those smaller pumps will fuel...I put LC in my 175 and had to pull back the AFC and star because the turbo couldn't keep up...Put LC in the 215 and its melt down...Way to much..But I'm still learning also...
