Detroit Series 40 Pump Mods?

This is a picture of the pump. What if any mods can I do to this to make it have more power. Can I turn it up like some of the 12v guys do? For some reason she has become a dog and requires 30-35 sec to make it to 35 mph. While I understand it weights 40k lbs, I need it to perform becuase as it sits, it is dangerous.

Thanks

Detroit series 40 1999-2000 model year we beleive...dang E-One

Also, there was a thread going around awhile back that had how-to's on turning up the pump for several different motors. Does anyone have a link to that by chance?

I would check to make sure everything is working and adjusted, you know the throttle linkage no boost leaks. How many cubes that thing have, whats it have for a turbo and intercooler?? Are you sure its a detroit and not a dt466?? You could slide the plate forward and adjust the afc but keep an eye on the temps.

You might have better luck asking this on the 12v forum. There's different templates for machining the fuel plate for the kind of power curve you want.

A Detroit Series 40 is an IH DT466. Yes, it's a P-pump. You can put a #0 plate full forward and it will still be just under max EGT. Another helper is to tighten up the gov springs, and advance the timing.

Turning up the pump isn't going to fix the problem. Granted a Series 40 (DT466) isn't the best engine choice for 40k, but it sounds as if you have other problems.
Yes, they had a p-pump. Check the fuel delivery system for leaks, replace the overflow valve, and check the fuel pressure. Next look for boost leaks.

I would be very cautious on tuning for more hp. Fire truck engines tend to be maxed from the factory. Even a pyro means little to a fire fighter. It would probably turn into a competition on which driver can get the pyro needle to spin back to zero.

Looks like an air throttle of some sort there. A friend had a bus that had one of those and it was dangerous. It took a second to throttle up, and even longer to throttle down.

Like others said, make sure all of your throttle linkage is in proper working order. Make sure you're getting actual full throttle.

Take care,
Phill
