Dana 80 Rear end gasket and lubricant..
Guys
I need a part number for my Dana 80 rear end. I have a leak and it is not the seal, im certain. It is super dark at the bottom of the differential and i have already tried to tighten the cover bolts as much as i could, and this has not been successful..
Does any one have a part number and company for a Dana 80 rear end Gasket?
Secondly, would it be to my advantage to run sythetic oil in the diff? How much does the Dana 80 use? and where can i find the 150W synthetic gear oil for the rear? Im also gonna do 90W synthetic in the front too while im at it..
Thanks guys!

Tightening the cover bolts too much can make a leak worse because it distorts the cover. When you change your lube, just clean it up real nice and slap some RTV on it and torque the cover bolts to spec. I prefer RTV, but you could go on ebay and get one of those reusable O-ring gaskets. Never tried one of them, but my dad's 04 came with these and they're pretty slick.

I agree, just clean the cover and mating surface real well. Then take some brake clean and spray down everything, this will remove any oil residue. After that apply RTV and reinstall the cover.

You would be well advised to run synthetic in it. I think my '98 calls for synthetic, but I'm not sure. I did not run synthetic in mine for a while, and when I last broke a limited slip unit and pulled it apart, you could see a layer of crud all over the inside of the housing where the oil had gotten pretty hot and left a layer on there. I now run synthetic 75w 90. Remember also to put a couple of tubes of limited slip additive if yours has the stock limited slip unit.

synthetic blend, 9 bucks a quart and this thing used almost five of them, I already added the limited slip additive, according to that it says about 10 ounces for a 4WD, truck runs well... no issues or clicking...

pull the cover and make sure it's flat. If it's not the cover it could be the pinion seal leaking?
I used a std. cork cover from Advance Auto (felpro), been working fine.
