crank case evac question

crank case evac question
How does it work? I know there is the evac tube on the side. Is there anymore to this system. If I remember correctly doesn't the vacum pump have something to do with it too? I am asking because I am having oil come out of my dipstick tube and was wondering if something is messed up with the evacuation system.

By evacuation system I assume you are referring to the blowby tube on the drivers side of the engine. Unlike a gasser that has a pcv valve returning the crankcase pressure to the air intake most diesels just vent to the atmosphere (except on California models). The vacuum pump has nothing to do with it, it's basically just the hose. You are correct that a blockage in this hose could cause oil to come out the dipstick tube. Check that the hose isn't kinked or smashed it's entire length. Some folks who have encountered this problem have found an insect nest blocking the tube. Coat hanger time.
